Hi all
Im having a week of low syns, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I had a bit of a bad weekend, had a couple of drinks on fri and a naughty tea/wine session for mothers day yesterday so want to try and make up for it. Also going to the cake and bake show on Friday :/
I was wondering, how low should you go? Ive read 5 is the minimum but wondered what thoughts are, as well as any other tips!

Personally I try to stick as close to syn free as possible all week and have 1 day off plan over the weekend for drinks, it seems to work for me but everyone is different :)

This is interesting to read, I normally use between 0-3 syns a day and thought that this would help weight loss - maybe I should up them?

I've been advised that the syn recommendation is there to aid the weight loss. Your body needs to process fats and sugars to keep your metabolism at a certain peak.
I've found I lost the most weight sticking to 8-10syns a day.

Syns are part of the plan equally as much as free food, healthy extras etc and sw says a minimum of 5 per day with a max of 15 syns. If you aren't having at least 5 syns daily then ultimately you're not following the plan.
I learned this the hard way because I really wasn't a 'synner' and one week I had less than 5 each day and was met by a gain! I was furious- couldn't understand why at all and then realised that I was having maybe 1 or 2 syns a day that week! I was told at class to go away and eat more syns and I did, upping it to about 10-12 and the next week I had a bigger loss than I normally would!!
I now find I get a happy medium by having a night off plan at the weekend- have what I like and don't even think of syns and then the rest of the week I stick to 5-8 syns a day.

Right, that's it - after today's weigh in, I'm upping my syns!

:) I lost 6 stone in 14 months eating every syn every day ;) you would do better to eat them and maybe up your superfree food and not eat as much free food.

I had a STS yesterday at weigh in, I think I'll try upping my syns this week to around 10 per day and see how I go with that :)

I think it depends on our pattern of eating. For one thing, we do need fats and whilst there's some in free foods and healthy extras, there's possibly not enough. Apparently certain levels of fat do aid weight loss.

But it back to patterns of eating, some people eat more food when they drop syns. I virtually always have 15. My mate tried to do zero. She had slower losses. But she ate more. Example: I'd syn gravy and Yorkshire pudding with roast dinner. She wouldn't have syns but would up her meat and spuds to, I guess, make meal more satisfying. She added more calories to her meal than I had. I had a 4.5 syn Cadbury mousse as a snack. She snacked on free mugshot. I added 90 calories to my day, she added 246 calories. I see syns as adding that satisfying 'real food' quality to meals and helping to control portions of unhealthy snacking. For me, it helps me to not overeat and really to rarely snack between meals.

That said, I have known people who've managed to cut syns out without overeating other foods. So it probably works ok for a few people. Don't forget, syns don't have to be unhealthy. Could be used for olive oil, cooked fruit, nuts, peanut butter, wholemeal bread etc.

if I were you, I'd try 5 a day and save rest for cake bake

Thanks for your thoughts Jael.
I was thinking of sticking to about 5 because I realllly want to eat stuff at cake and bake on Friday! I rarely use syns for stuff like choc/sweets, its normally on fruit yogurt, gravy, ketchup etc.
I'll give it a go and see how I get on. Its difficult to tell as I've challenged myself not to weigh in for a month. I was getting slightly obsessed!

I think you should try and use your 10-15 syns a day, as when you get closer to target, you can reduce your syns slightly to help you lose those last few pounds. If you don't use your syns you'll have nothing really to cut back on. I hope that makes sense.
