Adding icons info for a complete technophobe!

Can anyone please tell me, in really simple :S terms, how I can add any of the cute icons into any of my messages? I can only ever see them when I'm posting a new thread when, as now, they appear down the right hand side of the screen. Some of the ones you all add to your posts make me smile to myself but I haven't a clue! I'm really thick when it comes to computers so hope someone can help this technophobe!!

Thanks for responding, Cavegirl. I have looked at the 'more' button but, it's like now, when I'm typing this message to you, I can't see the icons anywhere on the screen so how can I add icons to my messages, as well as onto new threads? Sorry, I know I'm probably being thick!!!!!!!!!

Computer but, as mentioned, totally rubbish on any form of technology! When you say just click on them, I can't even see them on the screen when typing an ordinary message like this. I only seem to be able to see them when starting a new thread.
