I second what Welshtigger suggests! The mushroom and lentil loaf is delicious and goes perfectly with roast veg.

Last year I was following SW, but decided to stick with our traditional nut roast. Substituted the butter for frylight, but just enjoyed all the cashews as a once-a-year treat.

Also - Asda do a nut loaf, it comes in the same packet as the meat free bolognese and the falafel etc... I haven't tried it, but can't imagine it would be too high in syns at all really. I've tries the falafel and the bolgnese and they were both really nice, so I'd have high hopes for the nut roast! You could get it to try and 'spice' it up by adding dried mushrooms, herbs etc. Good thing is, you've got a while to paly around with ideas.

No, nuts are *really* high in syns! I can only find this one. I cant find it on syns online and I dont think it'd qualify for free syns as the TVP is very low down on the Ingredients list and I expect its not defatted (Dried Textured Soya Protein 8.9%). So it'd work out about 17syns per 100g cooked. Even if you do count TVP as free it comes out as 11.5 syns per 100g cooked. Its just full of nuts so is 21% fat!

Last year I made a butternut squash and sweet potato bake for my main course, I wasn't on SW at the time but it was made with creme fraiche, fresh rosemary and a bit of cheese so it wouldn't be that bad syns-wise.
I just sliced the veg quite thin and layered in a dish, chopped up some shallots and added, mixed up some creme fraiche and an egg and poured over then topped with grated cheese and fresh rosemary and popped in the oven til golden on top.

Nuts? Creme fraiche and cheese? Have I entered a new-SW-universe?

Creme fraiche, half fat, 1 level tbsp 1½
Creme fraiche, half fat, 100ml 8½
Creme fraiche, standard, 1 level tbsp 2
Creme fraiche, standard, 100ml 14

Oops, what I had meant to add was - you could probably swap the creme fraiche out for low fat plain yogurt or something. As I said, this was pre-SW and it was just an idea!

If you can't eat a pile of nuts on Christmas Day, when can you eat them? :p lol We will probably still be going for the cashew and parsnip roast as it is a family tradition, but having frylighted veg with it. I don't like the taste of oily roasted veg now.

Ooh I just bought a frozen quorn roast for tonight's dinner. Never tried it before and will let you know how it goes. Instructions say just to pierce it and bung it in the oven. No basting mentioned.

I wrap the roast in foil so the outside doesnt get too dark. :)
