I don't think until I started this diet I realised just how much of a social activity eating can be.

At the moment I'm in work and it's 'Payday pizza friday'. My team is gathered around a lovely smelling pizza whilst I am sat at my desk eating a tuna pasta salad (which is lovely but no Dominos lol) I feel like a bit of an outcast for saying no to the pizza. Nobodys being funny about my refusual of their offer because they know I'm dieting, but I'm still sticking out like a sore thumb.

I know why I'm doing this - but this side of it can be hard.

    Ah well

    Rant over

Could you save a few syns and have a slice along side your regular meal? That way you are not missing out. I'd rather have my regular syn free lunches for the rest of the week and enjoy the pizza on the Friday :)

I see what you mean, but surely there is no reason you should be sitting on your own while eating your lunch? You could go over there and socialise, maybe have one bite or a thin sliver of pizza, and talk and have fun with your team? You are only feeling like an outcast because you are making yourself feel like that.

I agree, I would have sat with them even if I didn't eat anything, just for the conversation.

In answer to your question - it can do. It makes it hard that's for sure especially when it's cakes, buffets, meals out etc but it's for the greater good in the long run.

Dinner parties can be made SW friendly and I've been known to eat my own lunch when there's a work buffet lunch on offer.

If you are bothered about pizza friday then maybe make your own on a pitta bread and take it to work to eat with them? Not the same as Dominos but you won't feel you are missing out.

We are faced with so much temptation food wise these days :-(

Dieting makes choosing in a restaurant difficult too! I spend ages trying to figure something out but I know that I should be proud that I'm thinking about everything I eat! You're obviously paying attention so treat yourself knowing you can still resist other temptations!

lol, I'm not sat on my own being a loner, I've described that wrong there. I'm not physically apart from them (it's only a small office lol) it's more the not sharing lunch and joining in that makes me feel a bit akward.

I'm not too fussed about the actual pizza, I've more of a sweet tooth and my salads lush, just more a thinking that being on a diet can *sometimes* mean you cant take part in certain things.

I know what you mean as every Friday in our office they have either chinese or fish and chips. It is difficult to sit with them as the smell of the fish and chips makes my mouth water. I normally go for a walk or take a late lunch on Fridays so that it doesn't look like I am being anti social but it is hard sometimes especially when they bring cakes in for a birthday.

I think it must be one of the best diets for not making us unsociable.

There really is a good range of foods we can eat when out with Extra Easy.

I go out for dinner at least once a week, sometimes 3 times a week. I think its just a matter of chosing wisely and planning your syns.

For those who drink, it must be harder but I will usually have a diet coke so no syns on wine for me (usually!:D)

Last week's lunch out with friends, I took soup. I said I already had my lunch and there wasn't much point in me spending £7 on something else that I didn't really want to have. This week, I sipped on a Diet Coke. I said I'd worn my retainers the night before and so my teeth were sore. As they started ordering, I felt a pang of hunger and was very very very close to asking for a menu, but my friend finished the ordering and that was that, so I was glad.

Probably does make you slightly antisocial, I don't know, but once other people get over the 'you don't need to lose weight' regime, it's fine, it just doesn't matter anymore.

And I'd say save some syns for the pizza and have a tiny bit! But then if you're anything like me, you'd be chewing while wondering what they must be thinking of you, eating pizza on a 'diet'! They can clearly picture you going on a 100 mile run to burn that slice off!

I think it can do to a certain extent. Because I mainly eat veggie it can be a big struggle to eat out. If my friends invite me out somewhere and I know I wont be able to get something then I wont go. I couldn't just sit there with a drink or anything, I just know I wouldn't be able to do that.
But most of the time I can find at least one thing on a menu that I know is SW friendly or not too high in syns. Or I save syns up if I know in advance :D

At my work we have a cake every week for Macmillan, and every week I bring out my trusty scales and weigh out exactly 28g of whatever cake is there (5-6syns). I am always part of the group and I use my syns that day "for the greater good" and I do enjoy my sliver of cake that i eat ever so slowly with my coffee! :)

I think you can let it get you to behave antisocially or you can use your syns and be part of the group... mih, it's your choice at the end of the day and that is what is so great about SW!

I'm used to not joining in with others. I dont drink so even if we go out I'm the only one who doesnt drink and as a diabetic when others have cake I just say no thanks. I dont feel anti social though and think it just depends on your state of mind.

    Aww.

Have you ever tried supernoodle ommlette? You can cook it with chicken, tomato, sweetcorn, mushrooms or whatever on it, grate low fat cheese over and squirt with frylight and grill it. It's quite pizza like in a way - esp if you cut it into wedges and eat with your fingers. You could take that instead of salad on a Friday so that you don't feel AS out of it. (Plus it is extremely yummy - I use the low fat chicken flavour ones).

At the beginning of my weight loss journey I did feel that this SW would make me antisocial. I was terrified that one little slip would cause me to regain everything. I found myself questioning people about how much oil they had used if they had cooked for me which i know is very rude. Now though I am a lot more laid back and my weight loss is still steady(about 2lbs a week) If i fancy somethin I eat it. Thats what I love about sw - the flexibility. Now I dont hide from social situations. I just adapt. It does upset me that I will now have to think about food for the rest of my life - I can never just eat exactly what I want without obsessing over syns but i feel so much better and i miss bread so much because before i would eat bread with almost every meal. I was so unhappy and unhealthy. I see that now. Sorry for the ramble lol

I think SW does make me hesitate sometimes when it comes to eating/drinking out. If I know in advance that I am going out that night for a drink, I will have a syn-free day in preparation for a few gin and slims. But if my OH suggests at 5pm to go out for a drink that evening, I will invariably say no because it would take me over my syns for the day. (He must think I'm a real bore sometimes!)

I guess it just takes away some of the spontaneity, that's all. We can go out for a meal, but we have to always choose carefully, which can be hard to do! So sometimes it is easier to stay in and have a home-cooked, low-syn meal.

However, tonight I am prepared to be sociable! We have friends coming round and I have been syn-free all day in preparation for a Chicken Dhansak and a couple of gin and slims. Can't wait! Happy socialising everyone!
