Exercise machines; are the calories burnt accurate??

Hey all.

I'm thinking about rejoining my local gym, I was however wondering how inaccurate people find the machines in terms of how many calories it says you've burnt after putting in age and weight? I've been looking at HRMs but haven't really got the money at the moment to get one.

Any advice would be great

to me they arnt.
the machine can say ive burned 50 cals but on my hrm ive burned over double that!

Thanks for replying I don't mind as much if the machines are saying that I am burning less than I actually am as I'm not going to take my exercise calories that much into account in terms of my daily calories. What I would worry about is if they said I was burning more than I actually was. Anyone had any experience with that happening?

They are innacurate, the other day the cross trainer told me I burnt 600 calls, no idea why as it's usually about 250csls and I was doing the same program!!
