I usually have a banana (or alpen light bar) about an hour (ish) before.
But ideally (if morning) porridge a couple of hours before xxx

Also - for energy while there you could try the lucazade lights (lemon and line or
Berry) I think they are fifty or so cals, but energise and hydrate without the glucosey taste xxx
