:( Hairy chin

Aah, the joys of PCOS. I was diagnosed 4 years ago after a substantial weight gain (6 stone in a year) and all the other lovely symptoms which come with it.

Now the majority of things I can deal with - weight loss struggles, acne, etc. but what I really, really hate and what makes me more depressed than anything is the excess hair. I get it on my chin and upper lip, and then on my stomach and chest. I don't really mind the stomach/chest business because I'm single so no-one except me has to see that, but the chin hair drives me up the wall. Moreso because I seem to be forever plucking/shaving/waxing/removing.

Any advice on a more permanent solution??

Hello there, Just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one dealing with body hair. It is the one thing that bothers me the most about my body. I have facial hair that you can see within 18 hours of shaving, the prickly hairs make me super reluctant to let anyone touch my face or be close to me if I haven't shaved within a few hours.
I have gotten to be lazy with my body hair (below the neckline) because daily maintenance would take 45-60 min. a day and it just grows back super fast anyways. I am currently at my heaviest weight and I just joined this site hoping that it can keep me accountable to myself and to others. I am also hoping that as I lose weight that hopefully the androgens take a break from causing me grief.
Good luck and let me know if you find something that works better than the endless shaving, tweezing and waxing.

I just replied to this but my reply got deleted hmm...

I'm here to support you as I know your woes. I cut myself on the lip shaving in the shower the other day and it was like a scene from Psycho.

Sudocrem works well to put on after shaving to minimise redness and spots/razor rash.

I haven't even bothered trying to do something about below-the-neckline. It would be like wading through a forest!

I wish I could find something better :/ I find that using hair removal cream seems to work best, for me personally anyway. But some of the brands out there kinda smell weird so I don't do it very often. Feels like i'm at it with the tweezers almost everyday now T^T Can't be good for the skin really :S

Nair hair removal cream is fab for me personally - I leave it on longer than recommended otherwise there's simply no getting the hair out!

Doesn't smell quite as bad as some of the others either.

I thought I was the only dealing with this, I am really considering laser, but can only have this in the UK at moment, so require 2 hour flight (1hr each way) which I can't deal with at moment.

Hi , I know the feeling . I've had PCOS for the last 8 yrs. when I was first diagnosed got sent to a specialist who put me on metformin, which to be honest didnt do anything at all for me. Kept going back to hosp for appointments for scans poking about etc, and just kept being told to loose weight, ( and he was quite rude about it!) but didnt offer me any help or advice in order for me to do this. I follow a healthy diet and am always trying to loose weight and i told him what i was eating and asked fir suggestions on what i could change fir greater effect and he couldnt offer ne anything constructive at all. After going back to my appointments so many times, it seemed pointless to continue , so for the last 5yrs I haven't bee seen by anyone and am on no treatment or management.i have very irregular heavily painful periods which for the first 3 days have to pad and plug and still leak, get v tired, sore boobs and hairy chin. My tweezers are never far away!

I had laser at Sk:n clinics and it was 100% worth it! it does hurt, but not as bad as waxing, I have PCOS and I'm 20, I've had the noticeable hair on my upper lip since I was about 11, and my chin and jaw follow as I got older (And fatter haha!) but its been so worth it, I have had 7 treatments so far, and now I don't actually do anything with the hair, the hair that grows is soft and fair and I actually feel like a woman! its brilliant, I know its so costly (I used finance to make it easier) but its so, so worth it.

I also have excess hair and have been considering the laser hair removal for a while. The daily maintenance is just ridiculous and i end up with shaving rash on my tummy and bikini line. It always seems to be on offer on the deal websites so i might give it a whirl.

I have found that if i use hair conditioner while shaving that that helps x

I absolutely know the feeling. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was about 15, I'm 21 now and symptoms have got worse since I put on weight at uni (coincidence? I'm not sure) and the hairy chin is a daily occurrence. I don't know too much about laser but I know the struggle. I get it on my chin, stomach, chest. Nobody ever notices it though, even when I tell them.

It's so reassuring to know I'm not the only one suffering from this. The hair on my face is just the most depressing thing, it's not like a few hairs, I could give Santa a run for his money if I let it grow lol. I'm saving for a home Ipl system, has anyone got one that they would recommend? X

Thankfully I don't have much chin hair, just 2-3 horrible black hairs that always sprout in the same place and need to be tweezed out once every 2 weeks.
I do however have dreadfully hairy underarms - no amount of shaving or creaming gets rids of the "shadow" and they are discoloured due to acanthosis nigricans, which is hugely embarrassing. I am intending to try waxing as soon as the hair grows long enough. Eurgh!

I have a massive issue with facial hair and hair on my stomach, chest etc. I got a Philips Lumea at Christmas and find it excellent. I've used it on my arms, stomach and face. I noticed a difference really quickly and would definitely recommend it!

I also have hirsutism. The best thing which I have ever tried is laser treatment. I have had treatments for the last 13 years, and it's brilliant! Costly, but effective!

There is also something herbal which I tried (available from health shops) which worked wonders. Can't remember the name though. Anyone know the name of the herbal tablets which I'm talking about?

That is one of the things that I am really hoping improves when I get rid of all this fat. Threading was good but hurt like a bugger. I just keep getting it all waxed, but sometimes I come out and by that night I can feel the little gist trying to come back. Grrrrr! What us women go through eh?

I started to get one or two black chin hairs when I was 18 which I plucked, it gradually got worse until I was spending 30mins twice a day with tweezers and a mirror. Eventually I went to visit a friend and forgot to tweeze, I was so embarrassed I pulled over at co-op and bought a razor. I've shaved my face ever since, purely for quickness. I was diagnosed with PCOs when I was 27 and my periods stopped for 3yrs.
I'd never put the two together. My mum was the same at my age and she had laser treatment, but now in her 60s she back to tweezing again.
I've considered the no no I've seen on TV, has anyone tried it??

I have had problems with excess hair since I was about 13 or 14. I was diagnosed with pcos around then too. I have had success in receiving lazer treatment through the NHS. It reduces the growth rate and coarseness of the hair but means you have to stay out the sun during treatment and for 6 months after. It's also quite painful if you don't get the anesthetic cream before. I have tried it all: waxing, shaving, electrolysis, hair removal creams and bleaches. I definitely think lazer is by far the best. At the moment I'm using a braun IPL system that you do at home that uses lazer to reduce the hair growth on my face and chest. It apparently gives results in 12 weeks (I'm on week 2) this one is easy to do and pretty painless so I have high hopes due to my success with lazer before.

Tried a Remington iLight Pro Hair Removal Device. It said to do a treatment every 2 weeks and that you would notice a difference within a week.
I did the first treatment on my face and on one leg (just to see if i could see a difference) and two weeks later noticed no difference, so I did the second treatment and sent it back. A week after that there was still no difference so I have ordered instead a no no, will keep you posted....
