Height/weight differences...

When I started dieting at 154lbs I could still fit into 12s but at 5'5.5 and now 140 I'm still a size 12:cry: (uk)...The problem is the dress I've ordered for my sister's wedding is a 10 and it cost me a fortune! Does anyone have any experience of what weight you might need to be to ease comfortably into a 10? I have 9 weeks until the wedding but just wondered, any help appreciated!!! x

I find it really depends on the shop, rather than one's weight. I have all sorts of varying sizes in my wardrobe!

I'm afraid that it will vary, depending upon the kind of build/frame you have, so some people of your height and weight will take different sized clothing. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to give you a reliable answer, therefore.

Have you thought of buying some control underwear - Maidenform are pretty good and M&S sell some decent ones? That might make all the difference for you and allow you to fit into the dress. If I were you, I'd take the dress into a store and try the underwear on with it.

Mind you, with 9 weeks to go, it may well be possible for you to drop a dress size, so don't give up hope! :)

I've just recently started buying size 10's and I'm the same weight as you and an inch shorter, it must depend on the shops, I've got 10's from peacocks, tesco and next

For fitted dresses I started fitting in, with help, at around 9st 7lbs. Now at 9st I am comfortably fitting in size 10's. I am 5'4". So if you have 9 weeks to go you should be fine if you stick to this diet. I lost 1 stone in 4 weeks and 6 days and our stats are pretty similar.

Louschu!!! *shakes fist* ;) All my jeans are 'Seven for all Mankind', I find they're best around the booty area for me but they're all 12 and none of them are falling off me at all. I do feel the weight loss but going into my goal size bracket would be the pat on the back I really need! Well done you, hoping to get there soon x
Poppy this is definitely a fitted dress and it's not stretchy at all. I don't even think wearing sucky-in-pants would work because you'd see them through the dress...I'd safely say like you I might need to hit 9stone before I fit into it properly...Well done on your fabulous weight loss! Fingers crossed I can do it too...

I just went shopping for new outfits with my oldest daughter. I have managed to fit into a size small from Zara (equals a 10) which is very fitted and no give at all, lined thankfully. I think if I was a few lbs heavier I would still fit it but it may be tight (well tighter than it is now). Will certainly give you motivation to stick with this diet. It can be done and will keep you on the straight and narrow (no pun intended).:D

Yeah it's the absolute best motivation, it's just the most beautiful dress ever and if I could fit into it I'd be over the moon. You know how it is with family weddings, the photos will be around FOREVER and I just couldn't bear another chunky family wedding photo!!! ;)

I have a wedding to go to too, one of the reasons for the diet (although mostly health). Did not want to look chunky next to my beautiful daughters (all 3 of them) as they do glam with ease. Plus a whole lot of family I have not seen in years. Do you have a picture or link to the dress?

Errrmmm - as everyone else has said - it varies. I'm a bit taller than you and now at the 140lb/10st mark and today wear a size 14 H&M cardie(??) over a size 10 EAST Top with sz 12 trousers. All fit well and are not baggy or clingy. Generally I am a 12 though, though with Primark I tend to be a 10 for trousers but they'd have to longer length to compensate. In the shoulders I tend to be a 14, especially for M&S, also for clingy dresses from M&S I feel more comfortable wearing a 14. Generally 12 for things like Phase Eight, hobbs, Laura Ashley (I have done a fair bit of trying on glam clothes BECAUSE I COULD for the first time! I think I have it nearly out of my system now and managed not to spend too much money in the process!!)

Good luck, I hope you make it - but do remember you can't slim away your bones!

Thanks Anjuschka for the info! It's funny how different people, different height, different weight can be the same size...I don't have big bones at all, my proper fighting weight is 128/130 but I comfort ate like a mad person at one point and just got lazy, accepted myself at a size 12 and that was that!!! :) I could probably wear a 10 up top but am a definite 12 bum! Determined though, absolutely determined and I am totally in love with this diet! x

We need to find a kinder word than "chunky" for these UK size 12 (US 8) people looking to be a 10 (US 6) ! ;=)

This was posted a while back Welcome - My Body Gallery - What Real Women Look Like its interesting to see where other people carry weight and in a Gok like way makes you realise who you actually look like after loses (not the whale in our heads).

The range of shapes at various height/weights show why standard sizing dosent exist.

Good luck with the dress, I wear a size smaller in dresses than anything else, when I was first losing (and almost twice as big as you) i went down 1 size very quickly then it took another 2 stone or so to go down to the next jean size.

Ahh I missed that ;). I agree while *in my mind* I may have been a chunky 16/18 all my life but now I'm a average/slim 12 :D:D

Oh and another thing - it very much depends on where you carry the extra weight! If I was better-endowed in the chest department (nothing left after 2 kids and the diet!) I'd have less round the middle at the same weight no doubt.

Just had a quick look through the gallery and I am even more depressed now! None of those ladies have the saggy belly and the dripped down effect that I have and I went to 130lbs!

Youve probably got a lot better legs and arms than most of them then ;)

I carry most my weight on my hips/thighs/bum so while I appreciate that my waist is slimmer than many on there but would rather have the slimmer legs......

Thank you but I wish! Having a baby in my 40's certainly did a number on my skin. I am hoping that exercise rather than any further weight loss will help it out.

It really doesn't make any sense to me that the sizing is different in all the shops, although i can see why they do it, if a women is a size down in a particular store she is more likely to carry on shopping there.

Years ago before I was ever overweight I had trouble fitting into a size 10 as I was curvy, bigger boobs and hips. Since starting Dukan the weight has dropped off my bum and boobs, I think I need implants in both areas now:D I think I'm more straight up and down now so that's how I'm able to fit in a 10 at 5 ft 4 and 141lbs, that's my theory anyway and i'm sticking to it:)

What a great idea for a site! Thanks for sharing! Just had a peek and no one at my weight looks like me (in my mind anyway..)

I carry most of my weight around my hips/thighs and reallllly need to tone up my legs! I have found my body has changed with each pregnancy (3) so no idea how I'll look once I am at target. Well, I do know it'll be an awful lot better than now ;)

My mum has lost a couple stones lately and looks teeny tiny, but when we went shopping she just couldn't see it! She still saw someone bigger. Even when trying on size 10 dresses. It can take a while to really see how far you've come and appreciate just how good you look.

I'd LOVE to be a "chunky" 12 right now ;)

Oh that looks like a good site! Going to have a quick peek now *through my fingers* I know I see myself differently than other people see me which is probably why the word 'chunky' came to mind but being one of 6 and having 3 sisters who are size 6/8 uk comparatively speaking I did look chunky at 154 standing next to those skinny minnies! I guess everyone carries their weight differently, I've never had a belly for example but my thighs/butt/arms/chest carry my weight...
