In ketosis so why pounds on?

Hello I'm Minxie and I'm addicted to scale hopping;)

Does anyone know why, after a great loss last week, and despite still being in ketosis and drinking all my water, the pounds are going back on again?

I'm afraid I weigh every day and while last week they went down each day this week they are creeping back up - 3lbs back on:eek:

Where can I be going wrong? I thought if you were in ketosis then the weight had to be coming off right?

Anyone else had this happen or any clue as to what's happening - btw it's not totm.

how do you know you're in ketosis, because as you say if you are you should be losing or at least STS Minxie, are you having carb creep maybe

Hi Jim, I've used testing sticks to check and they are def coming up quite dark purple (and they are in date, used ones on the ward at work). This is why I'm so puzzled - I have done everything exactly as the same as last week and have been so good avoiding all temptation such as chocs, cakes etc at work - I'm proud of myself for managing that but disappointed that the results are not there this week:(

I do have 2 cups of normal tea a day but also did this last week so don't think it can be that......

Yesterday I ate

B: 2 eggs, gammon steak, mushrooms
L: gammon, cauliflower and leeks in a little cheese sauce made with cheddar and marscapone
D: prawn cocktail with half an avocado and a little lettuce, half a dozen small meatballs (about 3g carbs)
Snacks: small pkt of peanuts (less than 6 carbs for the packet)
small pkt chicken snack things (practically no carbs)
matchbox sized piece of cheddar

Drank about 3litres of water, 2 cups tea, 1 cup decaff coffee

Am I having too many snacks? Don't normally have so much processed food but was at work and forgot to take snack with me so had to rely on the hospital shop.

It will be water fluctuation. I don't weigh daily but every few days and my weight goes up as well as down over the course of the week but - usually - ends up lower by the end of it. Drink loads, stay off things like Atkins bars (guaranteed to make me show a gain) and salty foods. You'll be ok.

Thanks everyone - I'll cut out peanuts, reduce cheese, increase water and see what happens! Don't want to give up as I really like eating this way as it enables me to socialise:)

Bye bye bellies!!!
Hi Minxie

Snap! Im the same - 7lbs off and 2 back on as of yesterday and im in ketosis. It totm for me so im putting it down to that. Despite what I have said im back on those scales .....I have to try harder because it really de-motivates me. I was wondering if I was eating a bit too much?? I will have an official weigh in again on Monday and see how its been.

Thanks again! Today the scales are back to where they were on weigh-in day and still have time to lose before weigh in on Sunday morning. Fingers firmly crossed and I'm still sticking with it and not been disheartened by gain......what I have realised is that I need to stick with something long term - it's no good just jumping from one diet to another and not giving any of them sufficient time to show real results. Have managed to be out and about, eat out and avoid all sugar laden goodies (or perhaps they're baddies;))

Have a great day everyone.

Bye bye bellies!!!
Hi Minxie
Me too lol! I weigh in on Monday so fingers crossed for a loss for you and me. Im eating out this weekend - what did you have? I think I might stick to the steak and salad.

Have a great day.

I lost 8 in the first week, 2 in the second then so far I've STS for the last two weeks. Weigh in tomorrow so we shall see

and the result of weigh in ............................. Jools xx
Daft question to the knowledgeable folks on here but I get confused. I understand that even though you are in ketosis you might not lose weight but can you be in ketosis and put on weight?
Thanks in anticipation: )

I'm no scientist but I would imagine you can in certain situations. Some things can certainly stall you in ketosis and eating too much of those foods could make you gain. Also if you're drinking or eating polyols, the body burns off alcohol stores before it burns fat, so if you're in an alcohol burning state for too long I'd imagine you can put on fat.

Most gains shown in ketosis though are false gains - just water weight.
Thanks Rose.
I don't use scales but I do use kitostix to check if I am in Kitosis. It occurred to me that I am putting as much faith in the stix as others have in the scales and I could be living in false hope.
I would say from personal experience yes indeed you can put on weight whilst in ketosis! You might be accidentally taking in too much food for your body - and I emphasise, your body. We are all different.

I can't eat large quantities of anything, however low carb and virtuous, without seeing an unfortunate result on the scales.

On the Atkins Community site this subject often comes up and they say that if you are not losing despite moderate amounts and following the rules then it may be time - their words - to 'get real' about calories.

Sometimes it is the balance of food that is wrong and needs adjusting as well as the type of food as many can stall badly or cause gain.

Good luck experimenting!
