I have caffiene free diet coke (1 treat can a day) but also have decaff coffee and water, thinking of trying green tea as I don't like tea but I've been told it doesn't taste like normal tea :)

A lot of people like the herb teas as well Rela, I think they're OK you'd have to check the lables though.

Just a note in case you're interested.

I've been doing a lot of checking up about coffee these last few days. I knew it wasn't a diuretic as people used to say, but I was surprised to find it was actually pretty healthy stuff. It's full of antioxidants and other cool stuff

In fact, coffee has 4 times the amount of antioxidants than in tea. Very cool (being a coffee drinker)

Back in Atkins day, coffee was demonized, but research updates and opinions change.

PS. Still believe Atkins first book was better than ones that have been written since his death...you know..the ones that try to promote the Atkins products :(

Just think he might have been wrong about coffee.

Oh, and coffee is actually fine when you are in ketosis. Possibly even beneficial as studies have shown that it improves fatty acid mobilization. Still, everything in moderation and all that.

Just thought you might like to know since I have loads of info in my head bursting to get out :D

Oh KD you are my saviour!!!! I was quite puzzled about the caffiene as i drank several cups per day whilst in ketosis on cambridge and it made absolutely no difference what so ever in my weight loss ( still lost at every weigh in ) I think ill try a cup or two a day and see what happens, theres no harm is there, the worst that will happen will be a stall in losing, its not likely im gona put weight on by drinking coffee!!!

Jools, whats the worst that can happen??? I think alot of this is just trial and error, some people gain/stall with certain things, some dont, u just gota find what works for you, but bring on the coffee i say!!!!!

I didn't have coffee the first time I did Atkins, but had it the 2nd time. Didn't notice a difference (well, except I didn't have the inclination to kill people the 2nd time :D)

As you say, we can have it on Cambridge, so I can't see a problem from a ketogenic view. Of course, I think it's wise to try to keep everything as 'clean' as possible especially during induction, but I happen to think that coffee is pretty good stuff and not deserving of the bad press it received in the past. Since I'm told from very reliable sources that it's fine when in ketosis, I'd certainly not worry about adding it.

My short opinion

I don't think that matters too much :D

My longer opinion :D

Atkins: It's thought that in the early days of the Atkins diet, many people found that they were struggling to get into ketosis. They were drinking low cal drinks and Atkins assumed that it was the caffeine in the drinks that caused it. It's now known that it was probably the citric acid.

Some low carb diets actively promote the use of caffeine by suggesting people take caffeine supplements (which are higher than most people would have in their coffee). The reason being that it is believed caffeine utilizes the body's fat stores.

I also found this

Ketogenics - Interview
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Question: Can I have coffee on my low carb diet?

Answer: There are different views on this topic, some authorities claiming the caffeine from coffee halts weight loss, others saying the opposite. If we search through the medical literature regarding caffeine's metabolic effects, we find numerous studies that show caffeine to reliably raise levels of free fatty acid in the blood (the precursors to ketones) while not effecting insulin levels. This would appear to point to a valid role for caffeine in a low carbohydrate diet plan as this environment would facilitate the production of ketone bodies, the glucose substitute low carbers rely on for energy (particularly the brain). However, there is one caveat that the literature validates as it appears that caffeine can have a negative effect on the body's ability to lower blood sugar, which would be of concern to someone with a hyperglycemic condition. Extrapolating both from the available research and from anecdotal reports, our stance on caffeine is that it is a benefit for many people on a low carb diet, except for someone with a hyperglycemic or other medical condition that would prohibit its use.

So I guess that the average Joe Bloggs low carber is fine with coffee

How interesting KD. I always considered Caffeine to be really bad for you
Atkins '72
, he pretty much thought that your body would use the energy from the caffeine before it burned fat. I have been advising people not to have it ever since. I need to change my stance on this obviously.

I agree the '72 version was the best book, the others were more about selling Atkins products.

I guess it's just one of those things that I've decided to keep an open mind about.

If someone tells me something I don't like isn't good for me, then I'm happy to believe it, but when I told (elsewhere) that something I like isn't good for me, I'll find everything to prove them wrong :D

There's very mixed messages on the web but more and more research is pulling up the benefits of coffee

I tend to check out pubmed as it seems to be the authority on latest testings. I also checked out various leading low carb and ketosis experts and nobody seemed against drinking it. In fact, some considered it a positive addition to the diet.

I've quoted some, and also found this about coffee and the decreased risk of cancer
Coffee and Cancer

I'm a cynic, and will never take one article as fact, but it checks out in many places (including pubmed).

But as with everything...moderation is always advisable. Besides, 150 strong cups of coffee in a period of 2 hours can kill you. Be warned :D

I have a cup of peppermint tea in the morning, sweetened with Splenda. I drink hot water with nothing in it at work, an occasional pepsi max as a treat and a coffee with cream for a treat in the evening.
