Messed up!

Went out to lunch with a friend today and picked stuff of the menu that I hoped would not take me out of ketosis. So I had gambos and salad, which as far as I can see is ok but whilst waiting for our meal I had olives. They are high carb food and now I'm worried I've messed up my ketosis. I feel so stupid :-(

Thanks. I just hope I haven't caused my diet to be slowed down too much. I feel like such a muppet!

If you do gain it will just be water and will be gone again in a few days. Don't worry about it!

Not lost anything in the last 2 days, guess my body did come out of ketosis. Don't think I'll bother to go out whilst I'm on this diet, it seems to be too much trouble.

That doesn't follow at all. You're not going to lose weight every day for one thing and you can lose just as much being out of ketosis as you can being in it

Ok, thanks but I lost 2lbs a day for the first 5 days and nothing for the last 2 days since I had my lunch out. I checked the lunch I ate on a calorie counter and it was only 270 kj so not much more than the shake. I just thought that somehow my lunch out had stopped the process and if that is the case it's not worth it, as I want to lose weight more than I care about socialising. Thanks for your advice though.

Ok, realistically having lost 10lbs you are NOT going to keep losing like that. VLCDs are so successful because of the massive calorie deficit, its not just down to ketosis. You could actually never be in ketosis and still lose. 10lbs in a week is brilliant :) Be prepared though, even on a diet like this we all get bad weeks where you might only lose 1lb. If your lunch was so low then its what 70kcals more than a shake, if you had it as an extra over and above your 3 shakes you had what 870kcals? Thats still tiny by 'normal' standards and really you could call it a WS day which makes it totally legal ;) If you had it in place of a shake then you had 70kcals extra thats nothing and youre still well under the limit to be VLCD

Id say with almost certainty its just been a total coincidence... and one of the hazards of daily weighing x

Did you work out how much you had in the way of carbs that day as a matter of interest?

it could be coincidence , 10lb in 5 days is a huge loss and cannot keep up at that pace .. I often STS for 3-4 days then drop 3lb over night .. just forget abou tit now and keep up the good work :)

If I go out to lunch when I'm doing low carb, I just opt for a chicken salad then at least your getting plenty of protein, and hardly any carbs. Dressing on the side and no croutons!!! :0)

I think my lunch would have been totally low carb if I hadn't have munched on olives. That's why I started this thread because I had munched away on olives whilst waiting for my meal not realising that they are in the high carb category.

Obviously, I have learnt my lesson and will not think that just because it's not a root vegetable its ok on the carbs front. I'm just amazed at how many potential pitfalls there are, because in all honesty I would never have thought olives were so high in carbs. Makes you wonder how many other carb filled veggies are out there waiting to lull you into a false sense of security :)

Also, just out of interest does anyone else get a coating build up on their teeth throughout the day that feels kinda furry in texture?

I used to eat olives a lot whilst I was on Atkins and they never put me out of ketosis. Other things that were meant to be low carb would though. Everyone is different. It's probably coincidental that you've not lost after eating them, the weight loss at the start of the diet is very sporadic. You can go days without losing then overnight lose 4 lbs. That's why it's best to weigh only once a week or you get demotivated.
