I have found a councellor and have officially started the cambridge diet as of today! :) So i thought i would do the trendy thing and start a weight loss diary to keep track of my progress over the coming weeks and most likely, months!

I havent weighed myself in a while, and as such, i thought i was over 18 stone.. but i am actually 17 stone 11 pounds, so ive lost 3 pounds before i even started!! God, you gotta love the cambridge diet.. losing weight before you even start! :D

Anyways, in seriousness, i am currently 22 years old, 249 pounds, 5ft 9in, with a bmi of 36.8. I hope to get down to a healthy bmi of around 23-24, which for me is about 160 pounds. That is a weight loss of 89 pounds, or 6 stone 5 pounds. Im really not sure how long that will take me.. i am hoping to get the majority of it off before mid summer as i am going on an inter-railing holiday through europe with some friends, and i dont want to be the one slowing the group down!

I will try and get some pictures of myself up soon, and hope to update this diary at least once a week. Thanks for all the support that everyone has given me already.. i really appreciate it!

    Day 1 (16/01/2007): 17st 11lbs, 36.8 bmi

    Hi Mike,

I think losing the 3lbs. before starting shows how eager you are to get this show on the road.:)

You might feel a bit rough for the first few days as it does take your body time to adjust.

I started back on SSing and I have done one whole week and it took me until Sunday for my energy level to start coming back up and this week I am fine and in the zone.

We are here for you, so if there is any questions or help needed just pop on and someone will be around and don't forget the shout box at the bottom!

You have loads of good motivation for shifting this weight now and it does make a difference how you feel in yourself... every stone off is a stone less to carry around.

Wishing you all the best on your weight loss journey.

I have to admit, the carbohydrate withdrawal is a bit tougher than i thought. I was hankering for something more than the cambridge sachets yesterday, but i knew if i had anything, my road to ketosis will be much harder.

Although, it did get me thinking. The cambridge diet relies on users entering a mild state of ketosis, due to low levels of gylcogen levels.. therefore the body instead breaks down fatty acids to acetyl-coA and uses this to generate cellular energy.

So, if people are finding it very tough to completely go off normal food in the first week or so, then would it be ok if a small amount of low carbohydrate, high protein food is consumed along with the shakes/soups? E.g. peanuts? This would not affect your bodies entry into ketosis, and may help people over the inital hurdle of stoping all other food consumption.

Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Not sure if peanuts would be a good idea, i know they are full of protein but they are high in fat too and if you are any thing like me, a handful would lead to a bag full which would lead to guilt and eating more. That said i know some will eat chicken if they really need to pick and it doesnt seem to damage the diet too much. I do believe though that 100% on it is the best way to go. Reading through others experiences it does seem to be the ones who didnt deviate are the ones who succeeded fastest. Have a look at Ice mooses blog. Very inspirational.

Totally agree with Happe - a handful leads to another .... etc ...

Best to totally stick to 100%.

If you really must eat look at the 790plan - which still has fantastic weight losses - and for you would be 3cambridge plus a meal from the boxes.

Once you introduce any food you are effectively on step 2 of the CD plan.

Your right that a little of protein will not take you out of ketosis, but what has been shown is that nibbling activates the 'chatterbox' and it goes on and on:rolleyes: and you get more adventurous and makes this diet impossible to do...

Because the low sugar (carbohydrate in scientific terms) level of the diet is critical to maintain ketosis, it is very important not to eat or drink anything else, apart from your daily servings and approved drinks - even a nibble of apple, raw vegetables, milk in tea or coffee or merely a diet beverage may make you feel very hungry and you may find it very difficult to carry on.

Sole Sourcing is also about breaking the connection with food and mentally it helps with the psychological addiction and the physically.

The first week is hard on this diet but once you see your weight loss on the scales this will motivate you ahead and strengthen your resolve to do the diet.

What are you studying at Uni as your very well up on your science.

Thanks for the input guys. I think i was just looking for an excuse to eat something. I will take your advice and stick to the sachets.. now that i think of it, i probably would end up eating a whole packet of peanuts aswell.. those things are so addictive! :D

Great advice mini. One thing would probably lead to another, id lose nothing, and id probably end up attributing my failure to the diet itself rather than my inability to follow it! :D

I am in my third year of medicine at NUI Galway. I have studied two years of biochemistry within it, so i know a good bit about the checmical functioning of the body. I have to admit that the fact that i am studying medicine is a spur to make me lose the weight aswell.. some day i will have to give weight loss advice to my patients, and i dont want to be giving out advice telling people to lose weight whenever i am a human mountain myself. Also, there are so many negative things that accompany obesity.. increase in cancer risk, diabetes, heart diesease.. the list goes on..

I really want to lose the weight, so i am going to stick this through, no matter what. My craving for food will go away when i enter ketosis.. i know that, but its so damn hard! :D

You are very knowledgable also Mini. Might i ask what you are studying/have studied yourself?

    Hiya Mike,

So glad for you that you managed to find yourself a counsellor, you'll soon be shrinking! :D

I'll be starting next week myself. I did try on monday but I realised that there is no way I can write essays while suffering the pre-ketosis dizziness!

Being a bloke, your weight should fall off really quickly for you if you stick with it.

Stay away from the nuts...... but drink lots and lots of water!!

    Good luck!! :) :) :)

Ok, so i officially LOVE this diet. Sorry i havent updated this thread more often, but i have been really busy this last week and a bit. I am down from 17st 11lbs to 16st 5lbs, a loss of around 20lbs in just under 2 weeks.

I have contacted my councellor again, and have ordered a 4 weeks supply of the diet.

I am actually finding it quite easy to keep to. The thing i was most surprised about was the fact that im actually not that hungry during the day.. i have had days when i would love something more tangible in my mouth, but the "craving" isnt too difficult to overcome.

Unfortunately, i cant find my camera, but i will try and get a lend of a friends one soon so i can take some before pictures.

    Long live cambridge...

    Hi Mike,

Fabulous weight loss in two weeks!!! 19lbs. is fantastic...men do lose more quickly than us women:jelous: :D

You can have Cambridge Bars after the second week, one a day mind in place of your milkshake, no more and they are a lovely treat to look forward too.

I have two favourites peanut crunch and caramel...the peanut reminds me of a snickers bar. I like the caramel as it is like a mars bar....but prefer it now to a mars bar!!!

I cut the caramel bar into thin slices and it lasts longer that way.

Wonderful incentive when you see the weight coming down like that:D
