I'm getting married in Rome! Yes, May is going to be a fabulous month to get married in Rome, that's when usually most weddings take place over there. August will be good here in the UK, the weather should be nice (fingers crossed!)

Traditions are very different between Italy and the UK. In Italy we mostly range around food during the reception (12 course meal!), and we don't really have bridesmaids, only 1 or 2 witnesses for the groom and for the bride. Then, we don't really have an "afters", people either go to the ceremony only or to the ceremony and dinner, and when they go to the dinner, they stay even later on if there's a party. I really hope not to offend anyone because the tradition is very different even in Ireland (my fiancé is from Dublin) and his family is not really being helpful to organise things and obviously he's never been married before so we have no idea and it feels that whatever we do, we do wrong! I have been accused of "being greedy" because I wanted my fiancé's dad to tell the Irish guests not to buy presents but, if they wanted to give us anything, to give us money. I have been told that I was blatantly asking for money from people and that I should be grateful of whatever people give me... I WOULD be, but my wedding is in Rome, my home is in the UK, if people give me dishes, porcelains and the likes it's going to be difficult even with the best DHL to have it arrive to destination without getting broken... What a waste of money would that be? Besides, we're organising the honeymoon and would appreciate some help from the guests... I don't think there's anything wrong in that. In Italy the bride and the groom would have a wedding list with stuff to buy if you're a guest... I didn't want that, as we already have everything we need...

but never mind :(

That is such a shame :( I was chatting to my Italian friend who has the same problem: she lives in the UK so to bring the guest's presents back would cost SO much :( It is such a shame your fiance's family are being so unhelpful, I think weddings are so different these days with each one about the couple, it tends to be the 'older' generation who feel 'offended' by money as a gift.... But to put towards you honeymoon is a wonderful gift....

I hope everything works out well, I am sure they will these things are a headache at times but have a way of ending well.... where are you and you fiance hoping to go for the honeymoon?

I love Italy we chatted about it for our honeymoon, sadly we cannot afford to book one as I am a full time student but we are hoping to ask for vouchers for travel... lets hope our guests don't mind x

Yes... it is a big shame. But luckily it shouldn't be a lot of people from the old generation, so I hope we won't have a lot of dishes to send off LOL! I really hope to get some contributions to the honeymoon, because we want to go to the holiday of a lifetime and spend 5 weeks exploring China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Hong Kong... but of course it would completely drain off our already little savings, so every help from guests will be appreciated!

You can still manage to go to Italy even on a cheap! Not only you could try to get some last minute deals, but you might want to try this webite: 72% di sconto per un soggiorno di 7 giorni e 6 notti per due persone con trattamento di mezza pensione presso l This is for example a deal for going for 7 days and 6 nights to Sardinia... at more than half price. You can translate the deals through google, not a great translation but better than nothing! A VERY good one is this one: 50% di sconto per 2 per 2 notti presso la Dimora Casa Eugenia a soli but it expires in 1 hour. It's 2 nights in Tuscany in a beautiful hotel with complementary visit to the Uffizi or massage or typical Tuscany dinner, for 220 euro it's a REAL bargain! Keep on checking that website, you might e able to get a deal that you like in Italy!

I'm glad that you found that website helpful! I always get a lot of deals with the English version and keep an eye to the Italian version just in case there's some good deals there also. I really hope nothing will go wrong with my honeymoon, thank you for your wishes! :)
