Last Sunday night I couldn't sleep. I think it was something to do with me having a cold and it being TOTM. Anyway, I didn't get any sleep at all and ended up calling in sick on Monday.

I took a sleeping tablet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night to help me get through the week at work as I was so anxious about sleeping.

I didn't take any - well herbal Nitol - on Friday and Saturday night, and although I went to bed a little late (midnightish) I got to sleep fine, and then slept fine.

Anyway, I took Nitol at about 9.30pm this evening, and don't want to take any sleeping tablets as I know it's me getting anxious and I don't want to get addicted or really on them.

But I really can't sleep - and now I'm panicking and I don't know what to do.

Has anyone got any advice or suggestiongs to help me relax so that I can get to sleep?? Please???

First thing is DONT get over anxious or you'll never sleep!!

    You need to relax *HUGS*

I suffer periodically from insomnia and usually find relaxing is the most effective thing. Have you tried going to bed, putting some music on and reading? Maybe try a milky drink too.

I know its easier said than done but try not to get too uptight, thats a vicious circle to get into. The more uptight you get the less likely you are to sleep and the less youre sleeping the more uptight youll get.

Keep in mind too, if you havent been doing a lot today you might just not be tired yet

I do wish I could offer more helpful practical advice

    Hi Sparkle :)

Sorry your're struggling with sleep at the moment hun. I'm afraid my first suggestion would be to get off here and try and lay down somewhere peaceful and comfortable!!

I know it may not be what you are thinking but any form of stimulation like being on here or doing PC games etc is stimulating your brain and not giving your body the signals to start winding down for sleep.

I think this is the only occassion where I would actually be suggesting that anyone log off and try to go to sleep!! :D

Have you tried any relaxation techniques? Lying down, closing your eyes and using imagery to put yourself in a different place. Hot sunny day, warm sand on a beach?

Starting at your shoulders and working down, squeezing your muscles, holding for 10 seconds and then releasing. Really effective when you do your hands/fingers and your toes?

Just some ideas hun. Warm baths and Lavender do help as I'm sure you know and quiet relaxing music if you have some.

Hope any of this helps and please don't take it the wrong way when I suggest you should log off here!!:)

Thanks for the suggestions girls. I'm going to go back to bed and try and take my mind off of it. I'm just really struggling to not be anxious about it.

Try your best not to hun but if it gets too bad, then get up again and do something else I say.

Another idea. If you have anything that is playing on your mind, try and write it down and stick it in a drawer until tommorow. That way you have got rid of it until the morning and can then take it out again. This helps me a lot.

    Thanks for your help ladies.

Well I just couldn't get to sleep... I made myself feel so anxious and actually got into a bit of a state. So I took a sleeping tablet!

Had an 'emergency' appointment with the doctor today, as it's beginning to get me down, and make me ancxious in the run up to 'bed time'. I shouldn't be taking these sleeping tablets anyway, as they're an old batch that I got prescribed over a year ago. Anyway, I saw the doctor and she was lovely. I explained that it felt like how I did when I was anxious and having panic attacks (except without the panic attack).

She told me that she's renowned for not giving out sleeping tablets easily, and she thinks we should address the issue causing it - the anxiety.

She has prescribed some anxiety pills that I had before, but a lower dose. I'm to take them, and the go back and see her next Wednesday to see how I'm getting on. If she then thinks that she should add sleeping pills she will.

The thing is, I've got myself all worked up over going to the doctors, and been all over the place, so I've just had to take a couple of the anxiety pills - that's fine, as I can take them up to three times a day. I just really hope that they work. I'm so nervous.
