Room for a (not so small) one?

Hi there

I thought I'd introduce myself. First, the shameful stuff out of the way....I joined the site in September doing Dukan, but fell off the wagon pretty quickly (I don't think low carb/low fat suited me...I was famished all the time!) and have only just got back on it a week ago

The up side is that in my time off the wagon I only put on 4lbs and that came off last week - phew! So now I'm going 'back to basics' and doing low carb/high fat.

I've done Atkins before back in the early 90s and lost a lot of weight but was ordered to stop by my GP after getting gout...I realise now that I was actually doing it high protein/low fat so I know I really need to concentrate on getting the fat levels up!

On the personal side; I'm a middle aged mare (42 now ), separated from a long-term partner so now a singleton with a dog. The hardest thing I find out dieting is that my married friends tend to view me as 'fun, girly night out' so always expect time out with me to be wine fueled. So wine is the biggest threat to any diet I do!

Look forward to getting to know people :D

Hello and welcome Pudding :)

You could be me! Had a bash at Dukan (though didn't get gout - ouch), 42 , and wine is the root cause of my weight problem!

You will love it here - loads of lovely people with great advice.

hiya and welcome. I have done the Dukan thing too, (and Exante, and calorie counting, and exercise, and... you get the idea..). I lost around 20lbs on it but kept getting into a faff with the alternating pp and pv days and got super bored of tasteless dry meat. I find Atkins much more variable and flexible, and filling, and the weightloss very similar.

I'm also a singleton, but with a 4 year old daughter, so no one looks to me to do any socialising at all, which has it's benefits i suppose, lol. For socialising, Atkins is a pretty good diet to be on anyway as you can still go out and enjoy a good meal.

Oh gawd I know the feeling! I've always been overweight......my first diet was aged 9 when I got sent to the school dietician! Since then I've done WW (put on 1/2 stone!), SW (lost nothing), Lighter Life (lost approx 4stone in 4 months....and put on 5 stone after), Dietchef and even one gourmet one who sent a pre-made chilled food box each week....which was massively expensive, mostly gross and left me so hungry I could have chewed my own fingers off.

Same here. When you take the fat out you're pretty much taking away all 'sauce' opportunities. I got to the point where if I saw another turkey steak I'd have screamed ;)

That's what I love about Atkins! I had a business lunch last week and was able to have a salmon steak with veg and garlic mayo with no guilt at all. It's just the avoidance of alcohol when everyone else is drinking which I find pure torture!

Many thanks for the welcome :)

Welcome Pudding-nothing more satisfying than fat . Dukan about the only diet I haven't tried. Enjoy Atkins

Hi pudding and welcome:). Eating out is great on atkins and once you've done your first 2 weeks induction you can try having a bit of dry wine occassionally - only lots is a problem for me:D

Great name - Pudding!
Have the same issues with wine as everyone else! Hehe!
Good luck with the weight loss!

Can I join the '42 club' too? :D. I've no idea how I got that old!

Still, maybe I'm getting wiser. I'm back on low carb after years of messing about with dieting. Ironically, I've done low carb before (did it long enough to be an old pro) at a time when it was deeply frowned upon. When carbs found me again (as they're wont to do if you don't stay 100% vigilant) everyone around me breathed a sigh of relief that I was off that 'terribly unhealthy diet' (yeah right - cos eating low fat is terribly healthy - not!). Messed about endlessly with WW and SW gaining and losing up to a stone at a time, then in desperation (in my head it was one step away from a gastric band), I tried Cambridge, lost 5 and a half stones, got down to 12st, felt wonderful. But some of those stones gradually crept back on, despite me trying to redo Cambridge numerous times.

Which is what I was trying to do again until a couple of weeks ago when a low carber friend recommended Gary Taubes' book 'Why we get fat'. If you've any doubt at all that low carbing's the right thing to do, read that book!

Anyway... :). I'm a reborn low carber and loving it. I really do feel so much better for eating this way.

The folks on this board seem really lovely (and I recognise a few names :). Really looking forward to getting slimmer and healthier with you all! x x

hey pudding.!!!! welcome and hello. i'm nearly 42 in April I've also tried loads of different ways to lose weight. I tried weight watchers in 2000 and lost 2 stone. then fell pregnant. tried it weight watchers again last year and i was so hungry all the time so i thought id give Atkins a go. This is my 4 th week and doing well. I'm getting married in July so i'm glad its something that encourages me.!!

You're me with your dieting Lily! I first did Atkins around...ooo....1993 I think? I remember there basically weren't any low-carb products and when I mentioned what I was doing to my GP he threw an absolute fit. Relatives and friends were totally convinced that I was going to drop to the pavement with a heart attack at any second :giggle:

I think where I've gone wrong before is viewing this as a 'diet' rather than a 'way of eating'...so I've tended to diet to a point where I was happen...then skip for joy that I was a size I liked...then relax totally and put it all back on again. Round and around.

So....fresh start in the 40s! :D

I'm 42 in July. What a coincidence that so many of us are the same age!! And ditto on the wine issue too lol.

Lol - i was 42 when i started last year. Now at 43 i feel younger than i have for many years - everyone says i look younger too! So it's the perfect age to move to a fabulous way of eating that even includes a bit of wine:D
