Rach, I can empathise. My husband has been in hospital for 4 weeks so far and will be there for another 2-3 months. He has had a toe amputated and is fighting to save his leg due to diabetic problems.
In 1995 he had a triple heart bypass and I was as scared as you must be now, fearing for his life. However, as soon as he was transferred to the specialist heart hospital and I realised how routine and matter of fact these operations are to the heart specialists, as soon as I saw patients who had had heart transplants on exercise bikes a week after their operations, I began to realise that the consultants and surgeons are such experts. It is hard but we have to put our loved ones into their hands - and trust them to do it right. Fortunately, most patients who undergo valve replacement or repair, or who have other open heart surgery, go on to lead better and more comfortable lives afterwards. I'm sure your dad will be fine and you will all be left wishing he had had it done sooner!
You need to keep focused for yourself, your dad and the rest of your family. CD is an excellent way to maintain that focus. Keep yourself really busy at the moment and don't give yourself time to think - it works every time, both with CD when you are starting and with keeping worry at bay.
If you want to PM me, please do - and I will be happy to reassure you more. In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers are with your dad and with you and the family. God bless you!
Chris
