The biggest loser: such a large deficit and still such large losses?

I was just thinking... So many people have said to me to make sure I'm eating enough calories so that I do not have a deficit higher than 1000 cals a day - or else the weight loss will be slowed.

But on the biggest loser they're having roughly 1200-1500 cals a day(of very good wholesome food and lean protein), but they're doing 6-7 hours of exercise.

So why are their bodies not going into starvation mode?

Just curious really.
