Tomato soup .... bleugh

Hi there

I made the tomato soup for lunch you know the one with the beans, carrots, toms and a pickled onion. Wasnt impressed.... tasted like the sauce from spagetti hoops :( anyone any ideas on how to make it more paletable (im not a great cook) I used it for my 2 wee ones as a sauce for pasta and made myself a salad instead lol. Can it be made tastier?
 
I've found it's nicer with some added finely chopped red pepper and onion.

Are they baked beans and what is it with pickled onions - who on earth made that up and thought it would be nice ?????????
