55lbs and counting...
**UPDATE** found out we are pregnant on 30/09/13, so weight loss is on hiatus. will only be attempting healthy maintenance and minimal gain over the pregnancy.
you see, 25kg doesn't sound like a lot and i need to take this seriously, for the sake of my knees, back, hips... and my small child, who needs an active momma. so i'm counting in lbs, even though i do my weigh-ins in kg. losing 2lb is more encouraging than losing *nearly* 1kg, after all.
to the pedants - don't rage. i rarely use initial capitals. this is choice, not ignorance.
now that's out of the way (and before my 10-week-old son wakes up), a little bit about me:
i'm 31, married, a new mom, and ooooooh autosave! easily distracted. that said, i find it easier to diet than most - i can calorie count and stick to it... it's just coming out at the other end where i fall down, so this needs to NOT be a diet. this needs to be a sustainable way of eating for now and forever. building new habits and breaking old ones, knowing my boundaries, cheating my metabolism but not cheating myself.
my diet is loosely based on slim fast - if my breakfast or lunch options are over 230cal, i'll have a shake instead. dinner i try and keep to 600cal, snacks to less than 300cal a day; i try to get at least 5 portions of fruit/veg including fruit juices and dried fruits, though my goal is 7 portions this often clashes with the calorie count (this stands at 1500 currently). my base metabolic rate according to myfitnesspal.com is ~1700 so i'm doing my best to only go through 1500cal on a bad day, 1300cal where at all possible on most days.
my real struggle is exercise. i tried going out walking, pushing my wee boy in his pram... and then it got cold. bitterly cold. i don't have the clothes to keep me warm and i'll be damned if i'm buying clothes that will (WILL) be too big for me in the next 9 months just so i can get out in this godforsaken weather. so i'm doing housework instead. oh, life you are so cruel to me! you see, i also hate housework. but hey, 29 mins burns me 100cal, so i'll bloody do it. grr arg. and i'll rearrange furniture - only need to do that for 14 mins for another 100cal to burn off. basically, i'm trying to fool myself into doing exercise without realising i'm doing it.
my hubby and i went to our local health point, got hints and tips there about portions (i need to make 7 portions fruit/veg, 7 portions carbs, 2 portions each of dairy and protein and 3 portions of fats fit into 1500cals.... hmmmmmm....) and i registered on myfitnesspal to help me plan meals, as we are living with my mum and share the cooking responsibilities (and therefore we have no control over our dinner for 3-4 days a week, bar choosing smaller portions). portion control is something we're both getting better at, though i still despair that i can't sit with a jar of peanut butter and a teaspoon anymore, kidding myself that because it's natural it's healthy.... no, MUST CONTROL THE PORTIONS RAWR.
i feel it's going well so far. we're deliberately not weighing at home, the scales are just too unreliable (you stand on them in a certain way and you miraculously lose 5kg ), so we're going to the health point every fortnight to weigh in, catch up, discuss concerns. i have a week til our next weigh in and this is the week where we are now counting calories and not JUST counting portions. oh joy.
i've learned to love black coffee with sweeteners; if i can do that, i can do pretty much anything.

Welcome and good luck with your journey!!
You seem to have a similar attitude to myself when it comes to this calorie counting malark - it's a new way of life, a healthier way, a re-education! Not a horrible DIET!! .
Weighing in fortnightly is a good idea, probably see more of a loss and be more motivated. Unlike little ol' scale-hopper me. Every day, god damn it. I need to stop haha.
Anyway!! Look forward to reading your diary!

well under my calorie limit for today though, mostly due to being out and about for most of the day. not in? too busy to eat. ta daaa! also helps that i was rearranging the furniture in my room for a while, hoovered up some and was literally zooming through the supermarket doing the grocery shopping. it all counts as exercise!
today is the first day i've not felt the need to pump. kinda sad also, it means i can't claim my meager calorie discount for breastfeeding ... i'm still under for today though 4 more posts and i'll be able to post my food diary and calorie report!
Can't wait to see your food diary, hope it gives me lots of ideas!
I too wish i could weigh once a fortnight, once a month would be better in fact seeing as i'm only aiming for 1lb a week.
Good luck with your weight loss xx
i did actually manage to pump a little bit, so i claimed 100 cals back for that, but i can see that this will probably be the last week of pumping for me.
i think i've got my 20 posts, let's see what we can do with that!
Your dinners all sound so yummy!!
when it's me cooking i try my best to make the meals as tasty and healthy as possible without scrimping on portion size. the roast lamb dinner was a laugh - that was mum cooking. i had one tiny sliver of lamb and LOADED the plate with the dry-roasted veggies
today so far, chicken and cranberry wrap (created my own entry for it, saves adding the ingredients now i know exactly how much it's worth) for brekkie, BBQ chicken tortilla pizza for lunch, and there will be chicken and chorizo stir-fry tonight, with a sweet chilli sauce. nom! had a snack and a half's worth of calories over brekkie and lunch, just need to keep an eye on that and count how many cals i can expect dinner to have...
i do love having a project, and that's what menu planning and calorie counting is to me
I think my BMR is something like 1600-ish but I haven't been eating anywhere near that... your average calories worked out great so go you! I sometimes have days where I am really hungry too. Even if I haven't changed my carb/protein ratio all that much, it's bizarre!
BBQ meatloaf, veg and chips. healthier chips than usual, too!
little pang of hunger after lunch, but distracted myself by prepping for dinner and playing with the wee man once he woke up. nuther little pang just before dinner, i had the oven on before mother had even got fully in the door! /pounce and just now, had to have a wee summat fine, if i go to bed hungry i just can't sleep.
Aw, don't be gutted!! A loss is a loss, and that ^ is nothing to be sniffed at!
at this rate it'll take over 400 days to get to where i want to be, i was hoping for something like 8 months (around 200 days) so i could have some time being all nice and slim before xmas wups me upside the head again. le sigh!
thanks for the encouragement erin
