how long does it take on average??

also do u stop feeling tired and cold once your in it because i have zero energy and im f-f-f-f-f-freezing lol

Can take up to a week. If you stick to it 100% and follow the rules to the letter you should be in it by day 3 usually.

The energy levels definitely increase, but be warned if you do not drink enough water whilst in ketosis it will have the opposite affect and make you tired. I've never had this though as I'm a good water drinker when I'm ss'ing :D

Not sure about the cold thing...I definitely warm up when I'm in ketosis but that may be due to the fact I have more energy so am moving about a lot more.

Ketosis is another name for the "fat burning" process. When you start the Cambridge Diet, during the first one or two days your body uses glucose (a simple sugar stored by the body as the complex carbohydrate glycogen), for its main energy requirements. Once the body has used up its stored carbohydrate, it then switches to its other energy source - unwanted fat. A ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrate.
The body's stored fat is broken down into little fatty acid molecules called ketones and these circulate taking energy to all the tissues in the body. The Cambridge Diet has been carefully researched and formulated so that when used sole source it has just enough carbohydrate for immediate energy and none left over for storage and induces a mild ketosis. The smallest intake of additional carbohydrate can upset this fragile balance and cause carbohydrate to be stored along with water, causing a plateau.
The mild ketosis is an intrinsic part of the design of the sole source programme because it has significant benefits - it is the key to the comfort for the dieter:
  • It reduces the feeling of hunger - removing the temptation to err!
  • It induces a sense of well-being with good energy levels
Far from being harmful, ketosis is an important safety factor - the body gets all the energy it needs from the breakdown of its fats stores, thus protecting muscle tissue and vital organs
  • Ketones are the products produced by your body when it burns fat. Your body excretes these ketones in the urine and when you breathe out. This is the reason why you can get bad breath and nasty taste in your mouth when on sole source.
The ketones circulate in the bloodstream. When they reach the brain they produce two really pleasant effects: you stop feeling hungry and gain a tremendous feeling of well-being. This helps you to stick to the diet.
The Cambridge Diet has been very carefully formulated to produce this mild, beneficial ketosis. This is possible because of the limited amount of carbohydrate in the diet. If you have any additional carbohydrate - skimmed milk in your tea or coffee, an apple or a slice of bread - you could break the ketosis. You will feel hungry (and may start to eat) and the feeling of well-being will disappear. You may also deposit glycogen which retains water, leading to a plateau.

What is the ketone test?
This is a simple urine test which indicates the presence of ketones. The mild ketosis induced by the Cambridge Diet ensures that sufficient ketones are produced to give adequate energy with some left over which are passed into the urine.
Two simple tests are available from the chemist - Ketostix and Ketur-Test. They are plastic strips with a felt tip. The tip will react and turn pink if ketones are present in the urine.
Most dieters achieve ketosis after three days on the sole source programme. If, after this time a test gives a negative reading (the top does not change colour), it is reasonable to assume that the dieter is deviating from sole source and taking in extra carbohydrate. On the other hand, a positive reading (the tip turns pink) can be very motivating for someone who is in a pre-menstrual plateau. It is tangible evidence that their body is indeed still burning off fat, even though the loss is not showing on the scales.

I started ss on Sat and was in Ketosis by monday :)

Not really felt that cold apart from my feet!

This would be a great post to be made a sticky.... I know you posted this the other day, but i couldn't find it again when I went to look for it.. It would be great to have it at the top!:)

i think its written on the cambridge site

Thats really interesting- 1 question tho- doing 790 doesnt knock you out of ketosis so why on 790 are u allowed the meat/fish etc and veg but on SS you cant eat something like an apple? Im sure its down to sugar etc but wouldnt mind having this explained to me! I know for most ppl the point of SSing is taking away all the food but I am beginning to think maybe doing my own version of 790 without paying for the CD products might work better- keeping me more satisfied, allowing me to eat AND being in ketosis all at once! I worked out some diff meals which are low carb, cal, fat and sugar which come out at less than 790 cals a day, would this wrk just as well? Ideas please!

I am on 790 and i was told that it is a necessity to have 1/2 a pint of skimmed milk a day. I dont drink tea or coffee much so i have sturggled with this. Plus i cant stand the taste. I have had 1 tablespoon of fat free yogurt instead. But i am just curious to if having skimmed milk would break Ketosis (as stated above)??

If the losses on 790 are just 2-4lbs less compared to Sole Source then you should be ketosis right??

Sorry if all that sounds confusing but i was just curious. I would appreciate any comments. Thank you :) xx

Not sure why someone said you must drink the milk.

My weight loss has been good and I haven't touched a drop.

790 is basically AAM, but in bigger quantities. Fruit isn't allowed on 790 (sob!) and you stay in ketosis because there are no carbs.

I guess the prob with doing your own version of 790 is that 1. food choice is still really limited if you want to stay in Ket - chicken, fish, cottage cheese, quorn, white fish plus green veg, so you may get very bored, or have problems with breakfast, for example 2. At 790 cals and no carbs you'll have real probs getting all the nutrients you need to stay healthy without your CD packs.

Maybe it's an all or nothing - healthy low-carb eating at no less than 1,000 cals for the next 3 weeks while you're working, or beg, borrow or steal enough funds to get you 3 weeks supply of CD before you go so you can do 790 while you're there?

I rely on low fat dressings to brighten up my lettuce (hate green veg), managed to stick with it.

My only extravagence is once a week I fry my sea bass in a little olive oil.

...though having read more posts I'm wondering about the skimmed milk, too. I just assumed we're not allowed it on SS beause of the extra calories and the 'thin end of the wedge' risk, but yep, we are allowed it on 790 and still stay in mild K ... and our packs are made with dried skimmed milk, aren't they? Is it the risk that if we drink extra skimmed milk on SS/AAM we might slip out of K more easily or slow down our loss?

I didn't drink skimmed milk on 790, either - keep remembering someone's comment about skimmed milk being nothing more than water a cow's waved a teat over :D

my CDC stressed that i have to have it and it also says its a necessity in the yellow CD book. I had it one day in my tea and it took me forever to drink it. I cant stand the taste. I thought i would give it a go because i would get used to it after a while, but i cant, lol.

Just bought a frothy maker so will have a stab at having some frothy coffee.

Ditto

I couldn't agree with you more. I started onTuesday but Wendnesday adn Thirsday I was so cold and I slept for England. I thought it was just because I had a hectic weekend before. Maybe not! But I am on my 5th day now and not so cold/tired anymore. Hang in there. Do a K test to see how your doing!

colour of K stick shows only a TRACE, is this good or bad?

hiya, my Ketosis reading is TRACE 0.05 is this what it should be?? It was actually a toss up between the negative reading and the TRACE, I honestly think it was closer to the TRACE. I'm just into day 3. I have done CD COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY, drank the water and had 3 shakes a day, nothing else. I felt like HELL for most of yesterday and although I still have a fuzzy head and a bit of a headache, and... maybe a little sickly feeling too, I feel a lot better than yesterday. Could I be in ketosis? oh, TOTM for me too.

Does EVERYONE get the feeling of wellbeing when they are in Ketosis?? If I'm in ketosis at the moment I don't feel that great, maybe I won't get that get up and go feeling:eek:

Im seriously overweight and thinking bt starting lighterlife. Can anyone who has lost a lot of weight please tell me where the excess skin goes?? Ive seen really bad pictures of people who have lost weight fast and they are left with lots of saggy bits.
Thankx
