Red face How not to make porridge!

Bought a different brand of porridge to try this morning, porridge being a good healthy breakfast and all that. The instructions said put 70g (1 cup) porridge into a large bowl and add 175ml (2½) cups of milk, then microwave for 2-3 minutes So, I weighed out 70g porridge and then for some daft reason, rather than measure the milk in a jug, I used my measuring cups and added 2½ cups of milk, seemed a lot of milk, but I didn't really think about it (well it was first thing). After 5 minutes of zapping, the porridge was still really, really runny and I thought I'd better check the instructions and realised my mistake. All cups, I guess, aren't equal. My measuring cup is 250ml of liquid and I'd added 2½ of them, 625ml of milk instead of 175ml - ooops, no wonder it was runny Needless to say I couldn't eat it, too much milk, too rich and far to many calories.

I won't make that mistake again

    LMAO!!

That's why I use the sachets as all done for you!! You even fill the empty sachet up with milk and that is the correct amount for the porridge.

Saying that I bought some Sainsburys Better Tasting (or something like that!) Porridge Oats with fruit the other day and it is THE best tasting porridge ever, it is so creamy without having cream in it!

I think we all have disasters like that at some time MD

I use 40g of porridge oats (which I just measure straight into the bowl) and about double the volume in milk. Add loads of frozen berries. Zap in microwave for a couple of minutes.

    Perfect.

Never been a great one for the sachets. Very expensive for a start, and I found they had little texture unlike the real thing.

Also, if you wanted 70g (which is a lot! Okay, if you are looking for a really substatial breakfast though), but anyway, 70g would be about 3 satchets of oats so simple I think.

As I say, nothing wrong with 70g as long as the rest of the day doesn't go too haywire.

It's interesting to note that many breakfast cereals suggest 30g is an average portion. I measured out 30g of mini weatabix once

It was about 5 of them Just sat there all sad in the base of bowl. Couldn't believe that people actually ever give themselves such a small amount.

    Oh boy you are right.

When I first look back to "comfort" eating when my Dad left home I can remember bowls of crunchy nut cornflakes that were absolutely huge, mountains in fact! And I would open 2 bottles of milk to get the cream off the top of both of them!!

Then I would refill the bowl if I had any milk left (I mean what is that about!)

    Talking of too many calories!!

One of the guys in my office has just eaten three mince pies (like I would have!), he just went to the loo and I checked and they are 321 calories each!! That's 1000 calories before 9:30am in the morning and he has now gone for a fry up (like I would have!!!) Such a shame as he has put 6 stone on in 6 months and won't listen (like I wouldn't!!), he just reminds me of me!

He'll have his time. I think that it doesn't matter what people tell you you should do, or even what you know youself you should do...nothing will happen until you are ready.

Sorry to butt in on this thread but it scares me what I used to eat and drink, in particular. A bottle of wine is nearly 500 calories and a pint of beer is about 250. I wont tell you how much I used to drink and how much it used to take just to get me tipsy! Then you have the burger king on the way home, which barely touches the sides, then raid the fridge. The next day you are all insulined up so you have a fry up...and more greasy food...by which time you need something to cut through the grease, so you open a nice bottle of wine...and so the cycle continues. Well, that was my thing anyway...NEVER AGAIN!

Mike only reecently i have taken to reading the cal and fat content of everything i eat and i am sometimes so shocked to see the fat content of things that advertise as low sugar or sugar free.
As my health is not 2 good at the moment and i am taking around 12 tablets each day i have to make sure the food i am eating helps line my tummy otherwise i get terrible stomach acid and i am actually sick so cereals seem to be the best option for me at the moment so i am having high fibre cereal with fruit twice a day which is low fat,low sugar and low cal so it is helping me lose weight and not get any nasty symptoms from the meds i am taking.

Sorry if i have taken over this thread and changed the topic LOl

    Hi Roch

I'm always happy to start a topic, no matter where it ends up, it's just good to have a discussion I think

Sorry to hear you're not well at the moment & have to take so much medication. A high fibre cereal with fruit is a good balanced meal & glad to hear it's helping with your weight loss. I love my porridge, and don't normally make such a mess of it, like I say this was a different brand, but I also make a GI Muesli, with oats, seeds, nuts etc, it's really good for you & very filling, which I have with blueberries & is my favourite breakfast. If you want the recipe let me know.

Take care & feel free to take over any of my threads

Hi Shazza, you found me out!! I've been fitbugging for about 6 months now, in fact it was Icemoose who got me on to it - thanks Mike - but I've only been on the forum for a few weeks. I take it you're in your first week if you're waiting for your targets, they usually go out on Monday so I expect you'll get yours then. My targets have gone up & down & all over the place, but in the last few weeks I've really got my act together, so they're steadily rising now, dread to think what next Monday's will be. But I have found if I keep my steps up, I can maintain my weight quite easily and although I eat a GI sort of diet, I do have room for a few "extras" but I have to keep my steps up. I was off work for a couple of months & my steps went right down & my weight started to creep up, but I think I've managed to stop it & it's starting to go back down again now. Keep up the good work & see you on the Fitbug forum & here of course (more going here definately ).

RussianDoll - my, my, that's a very fetching hairdo Actually my ex's father was scottish & he made porridge with water, salt & sugar - it was disgusting, put me off the stuff for years.
