Fasting -BBC's horizon

did anyone watch the episode of horizon about fasting? I watched it online last night so im not sure when it was aired on TV but it was really interesting!
Ive been struggling to stay on VLCDs but I think alternate days of fasting would be a breeze compared to VLCDs. Has anyone tried it and what results have you had?
On the programme he ended up doing 5 days eating, 2 days fasting, I'd like to try 4 days eating/3 days fasting on alternate days or whatever fits best with my week.
But I dont know what to eat on fast days? I know it is around 500 calories, perhaps a few VLCD shakes might work? as ive got plenty left.

I watched it on BBC iplayer earlier on, and it's definitely worth a watch! It's so interesting and a right eye opener to see mainly the health benefits that alternate day fasting has..

The 4 days feast & 3 days famine pattern is very much JUDDD, which is what I've chosen to follow and start tomorrow -- this program truly inspired me to make it my new lifestyle change, not just for weight loss but for health benefits too!

On the main JUDDD website there's a calculator that works out what calories you should consume on the feast and famine days, which in JUDDD terms are called up days and down days.. The general rule of thumb is 2000 on UD's and 500 on DD's though.. & most people use previous VLCD products on DD's I think as their calorie controlled and accurate which makes it a lot easier :)

They did mention in the program though not to go too mad with protein, and I admit that I've always been a bit of a protein fiend! So will have to wean myself off the high amount I have and eat more plant and leafy foods!

It's fantastic and I love the research being done on it. Think it's more of a lifestyle as opposed to just being a diet. I have family members with degenerative diseases so this really made me think x

yes I watched it, it was interesting, its amazing how quickly you can turn health things around, I def couldn't do it myself as I have a diagnosed eating disorder so should never fast due to my tendencies to starvation and binges but if you don't have an eating disorder it might well be worth a go. nice pic anyways :]
ive learned some more about this now on the JUDDD section of the forum (which I didnt even know existed before posting the thread!) its very interesting, I am not diagnosed with an eating disorder, but I probably should be.. though I have successfully done VLCDs which I probably shouldnt have tried. I will give it a go though as I need some way to manage my eating forever and I think days of eating less combined with days of eating more/just not stressing about eating might work for me

Hiya,

I'm on the Dukan but I've decided to do it for 5 days and then fast (500 cals) for two days, starting on Monday.

Would be great to see if it kickstarts my weightloss, as I have been messing up recently and I need to get my motivation back :)

I get very very confused with all the different diets that are supposed to be good for oneself. One website/diet sayd to eat 6 small meals a day, another says to starve every couple of days, another says to eat no carbs.... It gets so difficult to keep up and personally I think healthy eating/exercise is the only way to learn and loose simultaneously.

I know what you mean, I've been back and forth to my doctors for a couple of weeks for tests, obviously they say I'm to lose weight, and 3 different doctors gave me 3 different plans!

exactly babycakes, its so confusing isn't it, one min we are being told to do one thing, then another, for me I truly believe the best way is through regular healthy eating with increased exercise plus for me I allow planned food treats so I don't feel hard done by and its def working, everyone has to find what works for them but for me I totally agree with you on how to tackle it. Em x

Fasting sounds scary to me!!
It's probably fine as your body is getting calories but I've always been lead to believe you can't go below 1,200 calories a day if you want to be healthy?
I think weight loss is about self awareness. Knowing what you want and what works for you. Also not over thinking it. Weight loss is natural for most people as your body knows what it needs and can tell you when it needs fuel and when you need to stop because it's full!

I watched the programme and I did find it real interesting. It has made me think about fasting a couple days each week (still having a 400- 450 calorie meal) I have never done anything like that before and even reducing my calories by 500cals a daily basis is hard for me, but I think it's down to too much choice of what to eat, really! If I did plan to fast say 2 days a week I will have to be really scrict about it and plan ahead, so I do get the right nutrients in. I will need to look into it in more detail.

I am confused by the term fasting. Even Michael Moseley on twitter says he has scrambled eggs for breakfast on his fast days. Now I know that, it will make my ADF much easier. On my down days I was going 24hrs without food and then having my <500 cal meal, as to me that is what a 24hr fast means. No food, just water and herbal teas etc. I was struggling and about to give up. Getting up at 6a.m. and thinking I couldnt eat until that evening was really difficult, however a whey protein drink for brekkie to keep me going will keep me happy to do this long term. However imho, fasting seems a confusing term.

Very true - it is so confusing and contradictory at times. I've just started to up my exercise and plan to maintain it along with eating healthier.

Yeah I watched it too and have tried to do the same myself on JUDD, fast 5 etc. although the health benefits seem really good it's a big no-no for me as it just does my head in too much.

It was a really good programme I watched it the other night on iplayer understand it more now.
I think it's possible to fast however I'd be frightened it would bring back my bingeing tendencies and I'd put my weight back on!
However if in the future when I haven't binged for a year or so it may be a possible way to go I will keep it in mind
