Hi,

I'm attempting my first DD today. Wish me luck! I haven't bought the book yet.....wanted to dip my toe in before shelling out more dough on yet another diet book. I think my biggest barrier today is going to be my husband! We might be going out for a drive and walk this afternoon and usually stop for a meal somewhere. I really want to save up my 500 calories so I can have a normal tea and a couple glasses of wine tonight. It is Saturday after all! :)

Like many, I've tried lots of different diets over the years with varying results. I've had a really stressful summer finishing up a PhD that went horribly wrong and gained about 1.5 stone. I had already gained a bit of weight before that too. I really don't want to start 2013 at this weight (199.5 pounds).

My studies will hopefully be all finished in a couple weeks so I'm keen to take my life back and get my weight under control. I'd love to get back down to 165 pounds, which is what I weighed about 10 years ago. Im 6'2" and am somewhat self-conscious about my height. Being overweight just makes it worse. The students in my year are getting back together mid November and I'd love to shed a few before then too!

I really hope I can stick to this! I had a go a few months back after watching the Horizon programme on IF. I just did one DD at the time and can remember it being quite challenging.

Sorry about posting in pounds. I'm from the states originally and it's all I know!

Hi there best of luck for today! Don't worry about posting in pounds there's a few people here that do and it's all good :)

What are you going to have for your meal tonight? DD can be tough at first but you'll get into the swing of things. X

Hey!

I had already planned a week's worth of meals before deciding to do this, so tonight we're having shepherd's pie, home made. I've calculated 190g of the mince = 350 calories. The rest is veg and a tiny bit of olive oil. I think if I eat about 350 grams total I should hopefully be around 500 calories. Does that sound right, or too much?

xx

Are you allowed to drink any alcohol on this plan? If you do, do you include the calories and therefore eat less on DD's? I suppose its not ideal starting my first DD on a Saturday!

I think you are going to be starving on a DD if you drink any wine. As you have to count the calories of EVERTHING a little bit of olive oil in your shepherds pie and the veg etc may even take you over 500 cals for the one meal. I plan very carefully for my DD and rarely have enough calories left for a spsh of milk in my tea let alone a glass of wine.

Good luck with your day.

Hey you can basically use your calories for anything, as long as they are counted. I wouldn't be able to fit wine in on my DDs but that's because I like food too much lol. If you can make the meal tonight for 500cal then that's fine - enjoy it! Remember that olive oil is over 100cal per tbsp though.

Are you using anything to track you calories? I would highly recommend myfitnesspal.com which is like a big database of nearly every different food in existence and the calories.

Don't worry if it takes you a few down days to get them spot on with regards to your cals, going over (even by 1-200) isn't that catastrophic :)

Thanks for the advice and info ladies :)

Yes, I've used My Fitness Pal for a while, on and off. I love the iPhone & iPad app.

I decided to eat less and have a few glasses of cava (100 calories per glass), which in hindsight was a mistake! It went STRAIGHT to my head and made me feel sick before bed. Yesterday was challenging, but certainly doable. I even sat and watched my hubby eat a huge lunch while I had nothing. I felt hungry at around 12:00, and again at around 6:00 when I had tea. I also started to feel cold and a bit light headed late yesterday afternoon. I'm hoping that will go away when I get used to DD's. Saving up my 500 calories for one evening meal is doable now, but when I start work I might not have the energy for it.....will see. I've got a pretty sedentary job.

This morning I dreamt about food! I craved a sausage sandwich for breakfast but couldn't eat it all. I'm surprised! I'm looking forward to eating lots of healthy stuff today, and might even do some exercise later.

This morning I weighed 3 pounds lighter than yesterday. I know that's just water weight though, and that it's not a good idea to weigh myself every day.

Just a word of advice, if you stick to it strictly you should be able to do a mon/wed/fri down days and still lose. Not many of us like to do a Saturday as a dd :p even at the beginning of my juddd journey I only ever did max 3 down days a week. Hope it helps x

Thanks Hannata! Is three DD's per week enough, or are you ideally supposed to do four days some weeks?

I'm a bit concerned I'm going overboard on my first UD today. It's 11:30 and I've already consumed 1600 calories! I'm definitely going to do some exercise now!

well done on your DD a lot of people do m w f as down days and weekends as ups . I decided i would go by the book for the first 2 weeks and then as I dont have much to lose switch to up weekends or one day UP and one day intermediate

enjoy your up day. I don't log my up day calories but i know others do. I will if i stop losing

Hi Derby,

Great to have your input :) I'm tracking my UD today just to get a good idea of what 'normal' is for me. I did the calculator on the JUDDD home page and it surprisingly said my UD's should be 2300 and my DD's 460. I suppose the UD figure is just a maximum though, right? The UD seems really high to me, which is good I guess.

I also just bit the bullet and downloaded the ebook. Gonna have a bath and start reading. lol.

I'm really surprised how much energy I have today, considering I ate almost nothing yesterday! It's great to be able to eat today with (more or less) no guilt!

The book says you should estimate the actiivity level below the one you think you are as most poeple overestimate activity and underestimate activity but also gives 500 as a doable dd amount for most people and says you don't need to count on up days unless you are not losing which is my plan

Thanks Derby. By choosing the next one down it calculates about 2000 for my UD's and 400 for DD's, which is probably more realistic.

Tomorrow is DD number two! I hope it goes ok. 400 it is!
