Nervous!

Ok, so I'm trying to pluck up the courage to ask my doctor for Orlistat. I've been thinking about it for a long time but the thought of asking makes me nervous.
I've got about 6 stone to lose overall and my BMI is about 34 right now so I think I'm a suitable candidate.
I'm doing slimfast and I've read a few people online have had great results combining the two.
Can anyone enlighten me as to how they approached it with their doctor? What kind of questions did the doctor ask you and were they happy to prescribe it without any trouble or was it like getting blood from a stone lol.
I usually don't have any trouble losing weight, it's keeping it off that I struggle with. But I had a baby 6 months ago and I've found it impossible to shift this time. I'm also really embarrassed because I was weighed at the beginning of my pregnancy (just over a year ago) and I'm about four stone heavier now! :(

Hiya! To be honest, it was one of the nurse practicioners at my doctor's who told me about Orlistat, I'd never heard of it! So a short while later I just went to the GP and asked for it. My BMI was about 46, so I didn't have any trouble getting it, but of course you usually have to prove you can lose some weight by yourself first, which I had, and then you have to lose a certain % of your body weight within a month or two in order to be allowed to stay on it. Good luck! :) xx

Well that sounds fair enough :)
Do they expect you to exercise whilst on it or is it ok just to diet? I just don't have the time to commit to the gym while my baby is so young but I'm 10000% committed to eating healthy!

The worst thing that will happen is they say no so no need to be nervous. The doctor will weigh you and ask probably how much you want to lose. Some doctors want proof that you can lose some weight first, others won't but they will all want you to get weighed regularly to prove you are losing weight before they will prescribe more. Good luck, and congratulations on the new addition!

Thankyou, I've got an appointment tomorrow, fingers crossed!!

Well!
I was met with a bit of a snooty faced doctor who eyed me up and down and made a comment to the affect of 'we don't just go handing it out willy nilly'. I was pretty disheartened by this point considering I hadn't given any explanation as to why I even wanted it. She told me I'd need a blood test to rule out thyroid issues and she checked my weight. I've to return in January and see one of the practice doctors (she was filling in) and discuss it with them once my bloods are back. All in all, it pretty much went the way I was expecting and my reasons for being nervous about it were spot on. Actually hate some doctors, they make me feel like an idiot. I thought the whole point in this pill was to help obese people who are eating healthy to lose weight...what is it about me that doesn't fit into that category? Grrrrr.

Well, to be fair she is right to check your bloods first and rule out other causes and they are also right not to hand it out willy nilly. Doesn't help you much though.... Try eating as if you are on it until January then you will have proved you are determined before they even ask, maybe your own practice doctor will be sympathetic.

Yeah I totally get that they need to cover all bases, it's more the way she made me feel about asking...as though I had no right? I'm kinda confused about how to progress with this. I told her that I was able to lose weight but had so much to lose that I was a bit daunted by it and felt like Orlistat would give me some extra support and keep me motivated long term. But when she was referring me for a blood test I noticed she wrote in my notes that I wanted it because I was having trouble losing weight which isn't the case. Everyone is saying I should lose as much as I can before I go back to prove I can stick to it but I'm scared that if they see me losing myself, they'll say that there's no need to prescribe it?
