    Keeping it off

    Hi

It's been a while since I have been on here but just wondered if anyone actually keeps the weight off I have done this twice so far and not succeeded in keeping it off if it's stressful times that have helped me make bad choices and put me back to square one again I just needed to know any help and advice to deal with not gaining all the weight back.

    Any responses much appreciated

If anyone had this winning answer I would love to know too!

Back in 2009 I lost 3.5st. Kept it off for 2 years almost then got depressed again

Food is my comfort, I don't smoke, drink much or have wild ways! Food makes me happy I eat to celebrate, I eat when I feel low

This is now since jan the longest I have ever stayed "on a diet" even though I am currently having a break from sw as I felt my habits creeping in as lots going on

Xxx we can and will do it!!

Id love to know of people who have kept it off long term..2 years to the lady above is actually pretty good! Being depressed got the better of you like most of us but not the actual VLCD. . I done Lighterlife twice and within 6 months was double the weight than i started with... i feel like so angry at myself for doing that. But i dont know what is really to blame in my weight gain because both times i knew NOTHING about food or portion control so when i stopped i just assumed i could eat junk again and nothing will happen. Now however ive lost 2st 12lbs naturally through low fat and calorie countinf and a litrle bit of slimming world help.. and usinf my fitness pal and light excercises. Started January 4th 2014..!! But i finally started after 4 years of being overweight. However im going on a trip away in 6 weeks and really considering doing a VLCD to help me boost my weight loss only to do it for 3 to 4 weeks...but im worrid weather i should or shouldnt?? As now im more aware of calories nutrition and all that whereas first i wasnt but still scared to comit as i havent heard of many success stories in the long run..feeling extrwmley lost and not long b4 i go!!

I've been thinking about this a lot too. I posted this on my diary earlier

''Really thinking about maintenance again. This article is so depressing but the comments give some cause for hope. (I love this blog and have followed it since 2008) The idea that whatever you were doing when you stopped losing is what you have to keep doing for life is terrifying. I don't think I would want to sustain a weight that meant I had to eat less than 2000 cals a day and exercise more than 2-3 times a week. I feel less hopeful but also less scared about maintenance having had a little pause in proceedings this time. I will definitely have another pause in mid July and start to add in some lifestyle meals after this initial challenge two weeks. I'm more relaxed with the ebb and flow of it. Less black and white and more accepting of the fact I will never be done.''

It's second time around for me having lost 9 stone in 2008 but it is hard and it's usually dealing with the emotional stuff that unseats us. I think it's a case of not letting things go on for too long and making sure that if we do yo yo it's over a few days rather than months and by pounds rather than stones. I like to think I learn a bit more along the way but I will never again think I have cracked it completely.

Some good comments and advice I think the key is stopping the self sabotage before it gets to 6 st plus over weight. Knowing the triggers and stopping before we are back to square one. I will never be able to let go of my weight it is something I will have to watch for the rest of my life.

I have been maintaining for 2 years now. I am currently 2 stone heavier than my original goal weight and 7 stone less than my start weight. Is that success or not? To me it is. I have struggled hugely with the lack of structure since losing the weight and have tried lots of different approaches. What works for me is to keep an eye on my calories every day and to exercise.

When I started on the diet I would have hated to have thought that I would have to watch my food and exercise when I finished. Now I love the exercise!!! I have taken up roller derby (loooove it!) and I do gym exercises to support roller derby and I do lots of spin classes. It is actually something I look forward to :-)

I use My Fitness Pal to keep an eye on my calories every day. But no food is off limits. I can eat whatever I like - I just have a guideline as to the maximum calories for a day. At the moment I'm looking to lose a few lbs so I'm allowing myself 1200 net calories a day - if I exercise I can eat more (eg 400 cals for a spin class means I can have 1600 that day) which encourages me to exercise and lets me lose weight slowly. This is fine as I only have a bit of weight to lose but I would never have been able to take this approach when I was losing the bulk of my weight as I didn't want to exercise and it would have been too slow for me.

Lost 130lbs from July 2011 to June 2012. Have been maintaining since then but now have returned to lose the extra I put on whilst trying to work out how to maintain!

I lost weight in 2010-11 (six stone) and kept it off for two years with low carbing. I did have a blip but got it back under control quickly. However, all kinds of things have been difficult for me in my last job and I found myself forgetting the LL lessons and comfort eating and drinking my way through it.

I'm still quite a bit below my original starting weight but have a lot of weight to lose to get back to goal. It's early days for me (day five) but it has occurred to me that last time round I intellectually accepted the sense of the counselling at LL, but never engaged with it emotionally.

I have done quite a bit of learning about myself in the past year and a half (since I was last at goal) and discovered I couldn't actually identify most of my emotions, let alone handle them without food/alcohol! I'm optimistic that this time is different.

I will probably go back to low carbing and/or 5:2 once I get to goal again, but I'm really trying to use this time on packs to identify and deal with my feelings constructively (which is v hard!)
