Anyone put on weight with the contraceptive implant?

    Hi all

I had the implant put in a few months ago and without any change in eating habits I have put on nearly 1/2 stone In a way it kicked my ass in to finally starting SW, but at the same time it's still and extra 7 pounds to lose.

I am thinking of asking my doctor to remove it as I can see no other reason why this is happening. I have googled it and I know there's always 2 sides to a story, but there seems to be a lot of women saying the same thing, so just wondered if any of you have it?

    Hi Hun
I had the implant a few years ago and I did gain alot of weight, nearly 2 stone! And was one reason I joined sw.
I asked to get it removed and since then my eating has become alot better. It used to make me very emotional too and I bled alot so that used to be a nuisance.

I recommend going back to the nurse and explaining how you feel and what other options you can have. I am now on Ovranette pill and its been great, not had any changes with it.

This is very interesting because I switched from the pill to the injection, because of weight gain. I put 2st on over a year. Then switched to the implant because the injection wasn't helping.

I've posted about this before too, I think. I had a big discussion with my doctor about weight gain, and she assured me that because the implant releases it's hormone over a very steady period, people rarely put on weight. Whereas the pill and the injection, you get a big dose of hormones, then it peters out.

Since going on it myself, I have noticed a slight change. My appetite is easier to control now.

I can't account for how it affects other people, however, I know it hasn't made me gain. And my doctor talked me through it.

Maybe you should talk to your doc before taking it out.

I will have a chat with the doc, but i do firmly believe these docs and nurses say theres not much chance of weight gain etc, but i put money on it that they lie! When i looked into it more, the stats i saw on the implant website said that 1 in 10 women would put on weight. I think thats a large percentage for my doctor to say 'it's unlikely'. Hmmmm....

I am going to get it taken out though as I am also emotional on it, but I was so rubbish at taking the pill and hubby says no more babies at the mo so not sure what we'll do apart from not have sex

I've put on 3 stone in just over 2 years since having the implant.

It's only in the last year or so I've realised that that is probably what has caused the weight gain as my eating habits have not changed and I never never gained weight as easily as I do now and not been able to get it off.

Have discussed it with hubby and we're going to have it removed and I'm going to try an IUS instead. I just don't trust myself to remember to take a pill every day as it's been such a long time (4 years+) since I had to do it that I know I'll forget and with a 3.5yr old and a 2.5 yr old we're busy enough!

I would go and discuss it with the family planning clinic (or doc) and see what they say.

    Good luck!

    Hi there.

I have had mine in since the end of November, and in the time between then and now, I have lost half a stone (and would have been more had I not taken Xmas off and gained 3.5lbs!).

I have to say, I agree with the nurses...if you don't watch what you eat, then you will put on weight, but that can be said for any hormone based contraceptive. The fact that you're doing SW means you have to think about what you eat anyway. My appetite did increase, but I made sure I ate free or superfree foods, and if I ate anything that needed to be synned, I synned it.

I would leave it a bit longer, try and be 100% SW wise for a few weeks and see what happens. If you're not suffering any other side effects, then try to perservere with it

    xx

i was on the depo for a couple of years and one day went to get it done again and a different nurse to the one i normally had asked why on earth i was on the depo and tried to convince me to have the coil instead. she said that they'd be to some training delivered by specialist who had done research and they have proven that the pill does make you gain weight - especially if you are already overweight. they were sent on their way to discourage overweight women from using it.

i've been off the pill for about 2 or 3 years now due to other reasons and am very reluctant to use the pill ever again. we only use condoms now and have only had to use morning after pill twice and that was due to the condoms splitting. i made my boyfriend go the chemist with me as i felt judged!!! lol

Cerazette has a 12 hour gap so if you forget to take it in the morning you can take it at any time that day within 12 hours. it's expensive so some GP's won't prescribe it unless you argue for it - i did. i told them i was bad at remembering to take meds at the same time each day and had be recommended Cerazette by a nurse.

Thanks MK - I know that as the pills I was on previously all had up to a 12 hour window but I did still sometimes forget. I actuall was on the pill before I caught with my second son.....I think I only got pregnant because I forgot! LOL

I love the implant, not having to remember to take anything and NO periods....BUT I just cannot ignore the massive weight gain

That's such a shame. How long have you been doing SW? You WILL be able to lose the weight if you follow SW...it may be a little slower than you would hope but you'll get there

Do you keep a food diary on here? I found it really good for making sure I stay on track

To be honest Kirstabubble I don't do anything at the moment!

I did do SW and lost a stone or so but then just kinda went naughty again!

I do want to get back to it but want this implant out first to give me a better chance. Otherwise it's just a big uphill struggle!

I have had my implant in since July 2010, By that point i was down to target weight, having gained weight through 2009. Through just eating too much nice food. Not over consuming but lots of home made bread and homemade cakes etc and suddenly i was 2 1/2st heavier!
I think all contraceptives have side effects of weight gain, but not everyone experiences any or all of the side effects.
I know with the implant periods could get heavier or stop or show no change at all. depends how the indervidual responds.
same would go for the weight gain, some will some wont.
They told me when i had mine in at the FPC that they wouldn't remove it for 12 months, that was the trial period for it to see if any side effects settle, if after 12 months i wasnt getting on with it then they would remove it. but so far so good. no mood changes, periods still come but less regularily and a lots less heavy and not pregnant! and any weight gain is from me eating too much nice stuff

That's really good - lucky you

It is just trial and error to be honest. The same as any other medication. You just have to try until you find what works for you and which have no/bearable side effects.

The best weight loss plan for me was pregnancy! I lost loads of weight during both of mine.

Hmmm wonder if I should have another 9 or so kids

So it's not the implant, it's the fact you've not been eating the right things? By losing the stone when you did SW, you've shown that it does work, and you can lose weight when you put your mind to it.

I never said SW doesn't work. Nor did I say my weight gain is due ONLY to eating wrongly. I said regaining the stone I lost was due to stopping SW and eating the wrong things.

I have always eaten the way I have now but my weight was over 3 stone lighter UNTIL I had the implant. Now all of a sudden it's a lot higher and that's the only variable that has changed. What else could it be?

What I was saying is the reason my weight has ballooned is due to the implant. Yes I did lose a stone doing SW but it wasn't easy.

By removing the implant that alone should shift some of the weight. I will also factor in SW so it goes more quickly. But I don't want to just SW because why make it harder than it needs to be?
