Is there a start weight for SW?

I wonder if anyone can help.....I'm 24, 5ft 1 and about 9 1/2 stone. Everyone I speak to tells me I'm ridiculous to want to lose wait but I feel shedding a few pounds would make me feel a lot more confident and healthier. My weights crept up slowly over the years and because im short (and quite top heavy), I really notice the extra weight and want to start a healthier lifestyle. Slimming world seems like a wonderful option because I can shed the few pounds and then stick to a healthy but maintainable eating habit. Can anyone tell me if this sort of start weight is acceptable or not? Want to get as much information before I go as I can x

Hello there. I'm 29 and started SW at 9 stone 5. Don't let anyone put you off - slimming world is perfect for people with not much to lose. Some of my friends pull faces and turn their noses up but I'm the one laughing in the end!!

There is nothing wrong with wanting to drop a Few lbs and be healthy - SW is probably better for that than a fad diet where you have to cut back everything!!

I'm 2lb away from my target (lost 7.5lb in 2 weeks!!)

Are you going to join a club or go solo??

Wow that's amazing! That's what I thought, it's the healthy route to take as opposed to any of this fad stuff. I'm going to start a group as I think this will help me keep a lot more motivated then do it solo further down the line. I just didn't want to turn up and feel like I shouldn't be there...and I've seen a lot of different posts about restrictions on start weights etc and it started to put me off so thank you for your response! I was worried that perhaps they wouldn't accept people who wanted a goal weight of 9 or below?

Hi Neen! I say well done for wanting to address it before it gets out of hand. Well done, and ignore those people who want you to be complacent. I wish I had addressed my weight before I got as big as I did.

I think the rules are that you have to want to lose 7lbs or more and that your target weight must not be one that puts you in the underweight bmi. According to the SW booklet, the lowest acceptable weight for someone at 5foot1 is 7st 8lbs, so you'll be absolutely welcome!

I know I wish I had done something about my weight when it was only a few pounds I needed to lose, instead I ignored it and ate my way to over 21 stone. Good luck, and hold your head high when you go into a group. Yes, some people might see you as slim enough already, but if you're not comfortable, then it is nobody's business but yours.

I agree with all the responses so far - and yes it is about healthy BMI that may restrict you joining (just checked my books for you) but as someone has already said you are well within the healthy range.

Some people have adverse reactions when you only want to lose a small amount of weight - probably because in all honesty they want to drop a couple of lbs as well but are too busy/lazy to take any action!!

Just focus on being healthy and eating well. I would so recommend exercising to tone up as you may not need to lose as much as you first think. I've just started an exercise plan for 30 days as I think tone is more important to me now I have lost a few lbs. and it only took two weeks for me to drop 7lbs and start to feel better in my skin.

This forum has so many Helpful people who will help check you are doing things right and make suggestions to you. I use it several times a day and its the only way I have stuck at SW.

Are you going to follow the extra easy plan?

    Hey Hun
    I currently weigh 9st 7lbs & I am short like you too at only 5ft 2.
I joined at 10 stone but I have joined SW before when I was just under 9 stone.
To join, they say you have to need to lose at least 7lbs in weight.

I know how you feel though, being so small abit of weight gain really shows on me (especially around my thighs, bum & tummy) but SW has really helped me to feel better about my body already.

    Good luck xxxx

Thank you all so much for your helpful and advice and support! it's made me even more raring to go now

Im quite shocked to see though that 7st8lb is the lowest acceptable weight for my size, that is tiny, definitely don't think I'll be needing to be any way near that small (plus I don't want to lose that much off my boobs! Haha).

For any of those that have done it, how long roughly does it take to start losing weight with SW at a smaller weight, I know it's nowhere near as much as quickly but any rough ideas?

Sparty, I was going to start excercising once I've been going to SW for a few weeks and get used to that, so then I've got less to think about, what have you been doing for your toning? I think extra easy would suit me best but could always throw in the odd other days once im used to it? What do the majority of you do?

I started this time at 9 stone 4 and lost 5.5lb in my first week. Then 2lb this week just gone (my weigh in is Wednesday)

I do mostly EE and Red days. My bf isn't keen in vegetarian meals and I'm too lazy to cook twice lol. I like the freedom of having 2 hexs so tend to try and alternate as much as possible. I am def due a green day though so I'm gonna look for some recipes over the weekend.

I've started the 30day shred DVD. It's 20 minutes a day for 30 days and the results people have shown me are amazing!! Today is day three on level one and I'm gonna do it as soon as I get home.

I am so hungry today - cant wait for dinner!!

MrsWilsoncroft, are you you losing that on EE or do you alternate your days as well?

What do you girls tend to eat on the high street? like for a shopping trip or whatever....I was shopping today and the only choices seemed to be the standard fast food fare, I could have had a sandwich but I find when out like this I want to sit down and rest my poor tired out feet and have something warm...any suggestions?

I'm really glad I decided to join this forum also, it's helped me to get a wealth of knowledge before I've even started xx

    Hey Hun
I have been following EE since I started
    Really enjoying it.

When I'm out & about shopping I'll stop off at the jacket potato stand & get baked beans on a nice big spud or if my friends fancy sitting down somewhere like a pub thn I'll either have jacket spud, steak & potatoes or something with chicken.
If I'm rushing about in town then I will stop at Sainsburys or something and pick up a small pack of vegetable sushi for about 2 syns or a low fat sandwich.
I have even passed by the market in town & grabbed either a Punnet of strawberries, grapes or cherry tomatoes to eat as I shop

Im glad yiu enjoy the forum. If you're ever unsure of what to eat, check out the food diaries. Also there is an eating out section which may help.

Jacket potatoes are a really good choice. I always have prawns without Mary rose sauce.

It just takes a bit of pre thinking and planning but you should always be able to do something.

I am 5ft 7 and 11st 1lb when I started slimming world 2 weeks ago size 10/12. I have never once said I was huge or that I wanted to lose alot of weight I want to get to 10 stone (only 9lb to target) Which I feel was the best weight I have been and was happy. People also tell me I am mad to lose weight and look at me as if I have to heads. It really annoys me as it is my body and if I want to be a size 8/10 thats up to me. If I went up to 11 sone 7 I woukd be classed as at risk of weight gain. So id rather be at a healthy weight and not let that other half a sone creep on. Its your body and you need to do as you feel only you know when your happy with your body.

Yes I agree with the above post. You have to be happy in your own skin and its your body no-one elses. People say to me that I really shouldnt still be on S W now as at and been at target for 12 months. They dont get that if I go back to how I was before the weight will pile on again. This is a healthy eating plan for life. I love my size 10 figure now, even though some people tell me I should put a bit back on now.
