If you use the 20 rule then there are about 4.5syns per cup

The 20 rule is basically if its a treat food, i.e doesn't contain much that could be considored a free food (rice, pasta, potato/meat) then you divide the calories by 20 to give a rough estimate - it doesn't work in all cases and should only be used as a guide, but it can be quite useful

    I LOVE Miso

The tofu and seaweed are free so it is just the broth that needs syning. I make my own miso soup from miso paste and only use 1 teaspoon per serving so I calculate half a syn for a portion (approx a mugful in size)

Sorry to resurrect a thread corpse! But just a quick zombie thread comment..

I make a quick mug of miso with 1/2 teaspoon of miso paste (2.5 calories) 1 tsp of fish sauce (2 calories), 2 tsps dark soya sauce (12 calories) and then a few bean spouts and fresh spinach leaves thrown in.

According to the syn 20 rule that squiddie mentions above....that would make it 0.8 of a syn if you consider miso paste, fish paste and soy sauce a syn.

However, I understood that fish, soy and lentil products were free foods? Fish sauce is made of only two ingredients (anchovies and water) miso paste is mostly made of water and yellow soy beans (the fermented soy beans are down the list of ingredients) and of course soy sauce is made of soybean and salt. (All containing very low fat protein, which I would assume was a good thing?!).

Anyway, i'm very confused as to the syn value of my homemade miso soup!

If you look up miso paste on syns online it is 1.5 syns per level TABLESPOON so if you are using half a teaspoon then that's less than half a syn. Everything else would be free so I would suggest having it as free unless you drink more than 4 cups a day as that amounts to about a syn.
