On A Mission!
I've been keeping a blog elsewhere and there is too much of it to just copy and paste here, so i'll just do a quick run down of the past 8 weeks to get me started.
I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic about 6 years ago. Im now 55 and on 21 May this year weighed 17st.5lb. Ive struggled with weight and blood sugars, but I havn't exactly gone out of my way to deal with either. My doctor has been incredibly patient, but I think was starting to give up on me, she was going to refer me back to the hospital. When i saw her in May, I think in desperation, she put me on new injectable drug called Byetta (new in the UK, has been in US for about 5 years I believe).
First week I lost 7lbs to my amazement and the 2nd week saw a further 6lbs off followed by 5lbs the 3rd week. Even when i was much younger I had never lost weight at that rate before. Byetta makes me feel sick a lot of the time but the weight loss has kept me going. Was also on a drug called Gliclazide which is known for putting weight on, so I was very happy to see how much had come off. To date I have lost 34.5lbs in just 8 weeks, going from 17st 5lbs to 14st 12.5lb today. Size 24/26 down to 18. Every item of clothing i now wear has been bought in the past 3 weeks, including shoes! My feet have got smaller too haha.
This past week has been a struggle though, last Saturday I weighed 15st exactly and up till yesterday it stayed at 15st all week, then yesterday morning it dropped half a pound to 14st 13.5lb I eat very little, the Byetta makes it difficult to eat. I reckon my daily calorie intake is somewhere between 500 to 600 cals a day, very low. However my doctor is monitoring me every few weeks so I feel confident that if I start to run into nutritional issues she will be able to advise me.
When I saw her this week, she changed the Gliclazide to Glucophage. Glucophage is one of the very few diabetic meds that actually help you lose weight. I have taken it before in the past but could not hack the constant and awful diarrhea. However, my eating is now firmly under control so I was happy to give it another try. Started taking it Friday and so far no diarrhea.
Yesterday (Saturday) was our 34th wedding anniversay, so we had booked some weeks ago to go to Marco Pierre Whites pub called Yew Tree. We have eaten there before and the food is just wonderful. Since being on Byetta, I miss one dose of it on Saturdays so the my husband and I can go out to lunch and I can eat and enjoy it. Invariably I will have a salad, but it's so wonderful to be able to eat a meal and not feel sick as a dog after. Also, given my very low daily intake, I need one good meal a week.
But my daughter was also having a party yesterday evening as it is also her birthday this week, so I had a bit of a dilemma, lunch at the Yew Tree and evening BBQ at our daughters. So yesterday I missed both doses of Byetta.
I chose lunch very carefully, and I think I did really well, I reckoned about 600 cals for lunch in total as I had a small fish starter and then mussels in white wine for main course. I refused all the bread and butter on offer and had a small salad along with the mussels, and I didn't eat any of the white wine 'soup' that the mussels came with.
In the evening at my daughters I had none of the BBQ food and just had salad. She made a wonderful cucumber salad with dill and wine vinegar, it was so delicious, that I mostly filled up on that. I did take my byetta with me, because if i had started to feel hungry, I would have just had a jab of that. But its makes me feel so groggy that i wanted to avoid using it unless it was neccesary. But I didnt need it after all, I wasnt really hungry and I enjoyed the salad stuff.
I prayed that this morning the scales would not have gone up, as I had been desperate to break through that 15st barrier, and I had finally made it.
When i got on the scales this morning I was 14st 12.5lb, 1lb off since yesterday!
To think I had eaten so little all week and lost only half a pound, then yesterday ate fruit for breakfast, a good lunch and food in the evening and I lose a pound overnight. Maybe the Glucophage is kicking in.
Today I went into town to Monsoon. They have a sale on and yesterday I had seen THE most beautiful long soft knit cardigan/jacket. It was reduced from £65 to £32.50. I didnt buy it yesterday because if I continue to lose weight it won't fit me come September when a chunky cardigan would be more useful, so I didnt even try it on. But my hubby encouraged me to go back and have another look at it. I tried on the large and it fitted perfectly. This is the person who has only ever been able to buy clothes from Evans, now going into the gorgeous Monsoon and finding clothes that fit!
Anyway, I then tried on the medium, now I was surprised to find that because of the style of it, I could actually get into the medium although it would look better if I lost some more weight. So I bought the medium, and have put it away. Its so beautiful, a gorgeous mink colour with a sparkly thread running through it.
Of course I have done this in the past, bought clothes too small to 'slim' into, and of course I never wear them. However, when I was sorting through the wardrobe a couple weeks ago, I found some of my old 'slim into ' purchases, with the price labels still attached, and i'm actually able to wear them now! I even found a dark blue size 18 suit with the price ticket on that I had forgotten I have even bought, and am now wearing that for work.
Given that i'm on the byetta though, things are now different than they have been in the past. As long as I keep on it, I will keep losing weight. I've already past the 8 week mark, and I dont think i've ever managed to continue losing weight for that long before. And now im on Glucophage as well, then the future looks decidely skinny haha.
