Exercise on VLCD

Hey lovely people. I have been trying to get info on this for a few days now, but am getting contradicting points of view. Some say it is okay to do mild exercises when on a less than 500 cal VLCD. Others say that it slows down the weight loss. I am on my third week and have lost only 8 lbs. I started doing 20-30 mins of Zumba in week 2. I love the adrenaline rush of exercise, so don't want to do away with it completely. But I am barely losing weight. I wonder if it is because of the exercise.

Anyone out there who has successfully exercised on SS and continued to lose weight?

Gentle exercise (walking, yoga, Pilates) on ss is fine more than that and you could do yourself more harm than good. If you want to exercise regularly and especially something as energetic as Zumba then you might want to go up to step 2. That's the Cambridge step recommendation for regular exercisers.

Thanks Tiggemma. I was hoping that people would say it's okay to do Zumba. I want to do it all. Am greedy. Lol. Guess will have to take it one things at a time. :)

If you feel good doing it though I would suggest you keep going, just do a higher step. There have been some who have been hospitalised due to doing too much on ss!

I'm new to Cambridge and starting on Monday. However I have a 23 year struggle with weight, am a trained weight management consultant and nutritional therapist and have helped many people lose weight on lower carb/higher protein diets. From my personal experience and others who have lost and maintained weight, vigorous exercise will put your body into starvation mode with the result of weight retention or even weight gain. If you must do something like Zumba, it is absolutely counter productive to be on Step 1. You really should be eating at least 800 to 1000 calories. I know it sounds contrary to what we've always been told but it works. I once worked with someone who was happy with my food plan but refused to give up military style vigorous personal training. After three weeks of little or no weight loss, she finally agreed to stop (in return for long gentle walks) and lost two stones in three months to become a beautiful bride and the slimmest she had been her entire life. Best of luck. x

All the advice/suggestions above sound really sensible. Before starting the CWP I was pretty active (this is how I slowly lost weight in the first place whilst still holding on to my love of beer and good food). I decided to start on Step 2 as I didn't want to give up on activities, but didn't want to risk harming my health (or my weight loss with the starvation mode people have been talking about!). I was a bit worried that Step 2 would mean I'd lose weight much slower than those on SS ... but so far its worked really well for me. I needed to back off the exercise for the first week to get used to it, but since then I've been able to do a combo of yoga, interval training (within reason) and the FitStar routines I'd been doing anyway. I'm being careful - as Step 2 is still pretty low calorie ... but the weight has been falling off so at the mo so I needn't have worried about it. Then again I have quite a lot to lose, so that might be a factor

Whatever you end up doing, Obs, I hope it works for you.

Hi guys

This s really interesting for me to read. Im starting cambridge on Sunday after not getting anywhere with just exercising and improving my eating. Im at my last stone and a half of weight loss and have been going at the gym like crazy around 6 times a week. i keep thinking about all the celebrity things i read about them exercising and loosing all this weight. It just hasnt worked for me at all and its really frustrating. Im starting sunday and know i will have to give up the exercise for a bit which really scares me but at the same time i need to get this weight off as although im solid i still have fat on me covering my muscle if you know what i mean.

Has anyone also had the experience of loosing when not exercising? Would be really reassuring to hear. xxxx

I always did races and cycled and boot camps but though it built muscle it was covered with fat. I started Cambridge and temporarily stopped the exercise. I went back to it starting with yoga and Pilates and long walks to take my mind off food. Once I was into step 2 properly I started doing all the things I used to do but at a lower intensity. And then from step three I was running and enjoying every bit of exercise. You can exercise on a vlcd/lcd but you must listen to your body and stop if you don't feel right. You'll get back into exercise and wonder at how much easier it is to move with less weight on you!

Hi hun
Right i see hopefully i wont be off it long then.... cant live without my step classes x

Did the fat come off in the end? so you were leaner?

Yes you don't have to stay off it for long and you will have to drop the intensity whilst you're on so few calories but you definitely keep doing something. And yes the fat goes and the muscles start to show through!

You're absolutely right Tigs. I don't want to take chances with my health. I will take it easy.

That example was very helpful Kentishgirl. Thanks. :). This is my third week and I haven't even lost a pound. Perhaps, the Zumba is the reason. I have completely stopped it. Will try and do some walking if I can, but otherwise am going to take it easy.

Hey Missie. Let us know how it goes for you. :)

Can anyone advise if this is too much? I've started a couch to 5k jogging program. You start with walking for so long, slow jog for 15 seconds, walk for 60 seconds and repeat and work up the jogging intervals. I'm REALLY enjoying it but am worried that it's too much exercise? I normally do it 2 to 3 times a week - depending when I can get to the Gym and never on consecutive days. I'm on SS+ and have been since October. Gym since middle of January; this program for about 2 weeks (though eating has been shocking so don't know if it's a true reflection of my weight loss)

As you've been on ss+ for a little while then you should be fine with this programme. Make sure you're listening to your body and stop or sit down if you feel shaky or dizzy!

Thanks Tiggemma - I'm very very slow, and have felt great with it so far. If I'm struggling on a week I'm going to repeat it. Going to have a few 100% on food weeks and see, if I'm not getting the losses I would prefer I'll experiment with less exercise and see how that goes. Just hate to give up something I'm actually enjoying - me and exercise are not usually friends!

Hi guys. An update. I stopped doing Zumba these past five days and have lost 3 lbs, which is great. Considering that I managed to lose only 8 lbs in the first two weeks. Thanks for all your advice. This forum rocks. :)
