    Opinions please

    Hi everyone
    I've done s&s before but never got past 2 weeks with it. I've put a lot of weight back on recently
    And I just really need to shift it as I can feel my health getting at risk (knees hurt, un fit) I am 26 years old and weigh 21 stone 2. :-(
    I have started using the gym on doctors referral. Can I do s&s as well as the gym? I'm in 2 minds whether to do s&s or Rosemary Conley. I think I'm edging more towards s&s because on RC you eat real food and have to plan it all and to be honest I have a problem with shopping. I am a shopaholic in terms of super markets and I spend so much money in them that I've got myself in trouble which is why I'm kind of leaning towards s&s as I won't need to go to the supermarket unless to get dinner (I would be doing 3 packs and a meal) sorry to ramble on. What do you guys think? Xx

    In short, no. There's just no point combining any VLCD with the gym because your body is running on the minimum fuel it can whilst still being healthy so you can't really expect it to go further without more to fuel it. Being in ketosis you're in the most effective fat burning state anyway, the gym won't really add to that and you haven't enough calories or protein to work on muscle. If you think you can do it through the gym and RC then go for it, think how prepared and already in a healthy lifestyle you'll be once you get to goal if you follow that route. Do your shopping online and they'll help you to not overspend. Good luck whatever you choose.

    Depends on your reasons for doing the gym, it won't speed up weight lose with S&S and may well hinder it. If you're using the gym to increase fitness then you can eat the calories you burn in protein to some degree but it's a difficult one to judge. Gentle to moderate aerobic exercise for fitness works well - walking rather than the stepper for example, but start pulling the weights or running and you'd be better with RC, and if you go to a class you'll get an extra exercise session too.

    I'm back on S&S next week but also need to increase my cv fitness for a major op, so on exercise days I'm planning something like 1200 cals, depending on the exercise I'm doing - after much research this seems to be acceptable.

    I've been working out whilst on a VLCD and although it's helping my fitness levels I don't think it's doing much to speed up any losses, so depending on your reasons for doing any exercise it might be worth waiting until you have reached your goal weight. I do find it handy some times however that I've burnt an extra 400 calories running/walking so therefore don't have to worry so much about calories as I tend to eat meat in my evening meal and that can add to calories, which if I've worked out is pretty much accounted for.

    I would have to disagree here. I've done VLCD's before and carried on exercising with great results.
    The key is to adjust your exercise whilst being on the plan. It's also important to factor in your general fitness/exercise habits prior starting a vlcd. If you've never exercised before you might find it challenging to start training while in ketosis. If like me, you're pretty active already then your body will be able to cope and adjust. Of course in moderation.
    Speak to you PT at the gym.
    Mine has been training me for months now. On and off plan we just changed up the intensity etc
    I don't think advising against being active during any form of weight loss plan is wise. Moving and trying to get fit is always a good thing as long as you listen to your body and don't push yourself too hard.

    Yep gentle exercise like walking swimming yoga - anything toning is always great - dieting or not. When you're fully 'in' this kind of diet then you'll find you can up the intensity gradually and go from a walk to a jog to a run so to speak.
    Listen to your body and chug down the water!!
    Only you know how you feel and VLCDs effect everyone differently. I was happily doing Zumba when on the Cambridge diet, but I could barely walk around the shops without feeling woozy on my first week of SnS! It got better the longer I was on SnS and soon I was walking miles and going for it on my exercise bike. So it really is an individual experience.
    Good luck with whatever you choose to do - the main thing is you have chosen to change your life for the better and that is a great start.

    I'm coming from a nutritionists point of view (I'm a qualified one), you're body does not have enough to give much more at the gym than it gives on a general daily basis. It isn't healthy. I didn't say don't be active, I said that the gym combined with a vlcd isn't worthwhile. Which I would say it is. Like someone else said, gentle walks, swimming and things like that are a much better idea.

    But back to the OP, I'd talk to your doctor about it and see what they recommend. They may also refer you to a dietician who could come up with an eating plan that would compliment you going to the gym.
