Well today I searched my local tesco & morrisons for tins of chickpea dhal. Think I need to make a journey to a bigger tesco to source it BUT I was thinking, how hard would it be to re create a tin using chickpeas & spices any one tried it before?
Asda do it aswell if you have one of those near you? Our local store (which isnt one of the HUGE ones stocks it)
It should be relatively simple to make though, just a quick search and theres loads of recipes online. This is literally just the first that came up- just switch the butter/oil to fry light if you want it totally syn free. Though I do think, personally, that onions get a nicer softer texture with a little butter and is worth the minimal amount of syns for a nicer flavour. I usually do fry light with a teaspoon or so butter (depending on the amount of onion Im cooking)
Heat a deep saucepan or a medium sized wok and add the oil or butter followed by the onions and garlic.
Fry the mixture till the onions are caramelised. Then add the salt, cumin, coriander, turmeric and red chilli powders. Mix for a minute and tip in the tomato. Cook the sauce until it begins to thicken.
Add ¼ cup of water and stir. Then tip in the chickpeas and mix. Mash a few of the chickpeas while cooking. Cover and simmer for five minutes. Then add the ginger and the garam masala. Cook for another minute.
My nearest asda is 40mins away. Thank you, doesn't look that hard, might give it ago. Was really wanting the tins so I can just chuck it together with the savoury rice & eggs to make a quick lunch. X
