A Poem for my Dad

#1
Today I saw you smile at me
Through an old mans eyes
It’s clever how you do that trick
And catch me by surprise

And Christmas Morning,
I found a shell
At my feet while at the sea
It didn’t take me long to know
You were standing there with me

A seashell here, a feather there
A cold and windy day
A rainbow in a sunless sky
Means you have passed my way

So long ago you said goodbye
But how was I to know
Those words would be the last I heard
You knew. How did you know?

If only, maybe, for a moment
I could hear your voice again
It’d be the sweetest sound I’d know
And I’d pray it never end

I’ve come so far since you’ve been gone
Though it feels like yesterday
Days to weeks,
To months to years
Since you went away

My life has changed in many ways
There’s been a lot tears,
But I wish that you could see me now,
I’m healed. There’s no more fear.

So now I look in other places ,
And see you in different ways
It’s not the same, it does not compare
It couldn’t - that’s no surprise

Until we meet again dear dad,
I’ll be patient, I will try,
Hoping for a glimpse of you
Smiling through an old man’s eyes

Thank you ladies.

I sure miss my dad - he was indeed my hero. Never a kinder, genlter soul walked this earth. ANd while its been 15 years - it feels like yesterday.

I always get sentimental for him at Christmas. December is also his birth month and his death month, so its a very sentimental time all around.

THanks for reading my poem. :)

BL onlyjust seen your beautiful poem, hauntingly beautiful. I'm sorry to say I never had that kind of relationship with my Dad, but I do know he loved me and I came to love him again towards the end of his life once I could let go of the blame I felt towards him. One thing my weight loss journey has done is make me less judgemental of others and accept people for who they are.

Christ almighty!
I didn't cry at my dad's funeral in august 2005 even when doing readings and singing and have had to be the strong one ever since as I'm most like Dad. But you have officially set me off.

Absolutely beautiful, genuine and true. You should be very proud of yourself :) xxxx

Hi Chipstick

I'm sorry you lost your dad too, and that a lot of burden has been left on you :(....but good on you for taking on the roll.

I am glad you liked the poem, and that it touched you. Thank you very muc.

It is indeed interesting when things like this, like the song, occur. It's comforting to know they are around us, when they can be. :)

xx

A wonderful dedication to your dad, sweetheart! It's always hard to lose a parent; you don't get over it, you just learn to live with it every day.

Thank you for posting, it's absolutely lovely!
