Headaches

I have suffered from headaches all my life and now have them every couple of weeks where they can last for up to 4-5 days of the week. Have had a referral to neurology in the past and although no MRI they feel there is nothing sinister going on. The neurologist recommended oxygen therapy which my GP took one look at and laughed and suggested 2-3hrs alternating paracetamol/ibuprofen and said it is cluster headaches.

I was wondering if anyone has had any success with anything which is not medication as I feel I take so many OTC pills and don't think they help really. I have tried acupuncture, exercise and the mentholly thing you smear on your forehead and temples but don't seem to make a difference. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I suffered with migraines for 30 odd years and it's only now over the last 6 months I haven't had one due to change in diet. When I get a mild headache I wear travel bands and it dosen't take long for it to go.

Try cutting out citrus, cheese, choc, nuts, cream, coffee and keep your bowels moving.:)

Thanks I had hoped that my healthier lifestyle would have helped. The only thing in your list I can still cut is the citrus as I don't really have any of the others. I will try the travel bands though.

I have been having bad headaches for years. Sometimes one a week when they were at their worse although I could go months without one. Since starting SW I have only had one bad one and that was after going off plan one day. It could be coincidence but I am convinced that the healthy eating helps and that something I used to eat triggered the headaches. Something I was advised to do but never got around to was to keep a diary of what I ate and when I had headaches to see if there was a pattern.

The other thing I would say is that if over the counter pain killers aren't working then go back to your GP to see if he can give you anything more effective. Wonder why he was so quick to dismiss the oxygen thereapy if the specialist recommended it?

i have suffered with them for years too. i8 also have epilepsy.I do see a neurologist aswell. i have been prescribed topiramate but is not working so they are trying me on gabapentin which eases it of a little.

I suffer with them and they r so bad i just want to die!! I take beta blockers now to prevent them which has massively helped also my dr who suffers with migraines too says that asprin is best to take rather than paracetamol the 300mg. Interesting i read somewhere that cluster headaches can sometimes be cured by eating icecream (or something really cold) when you feel one coming on, aparently cluster headaches are very similar to brain freeze and so when u have something really cold it can stop ur headache, i dont know the science behind it but if it works for some it might be worth researching right, i know when mine were at their worst id have tried anything.

Aah thanks for the tip about aspirin, can you buy 300mg over counter?
They wouldn't put me on beta blockers because of my asthma
:)

Aaaah I have to watch aspirin with asthma too, might see wot doc says x

Will try the aspirin. Sometimes upsets my tummy but ibuprofen does that too. Also like ice cream idea. Finally my headache of 4 days went today and the relief is huge but am def going to stock up for next time. If it continues will go back to the doc. Am now keeping a diary alongside my food diary so will also take a look once I have a few episodes to compare. Thanks for responses.
