lowering Calories vs. Increasing Expenditure

So is the result same or not? Nobody seems to attack this question head on, only in bits and pieces.

e.g. my maintenance with three training days a week is about 2800 daily avg. (measured over several weeks)

If I drop to an average of 2300 per day that's 3500 a week, but I could hypothetically do a couple of hours of cardio and keep eating 2800... some people suggest one or the other, but which does the science prefer, given the same deficit?
