Maynie's 2nd weight-loss diary

In 2010, I lost 4 stone on South Beach. I was trying to lose weight to have fertility treatment, but got pregnant naturally. My diary from then is here:

My son is now 16 months old and I want to get back to losing weight. I'm 1 stone 6 pounds heavier than I was when I got pregnant. I'd like to say this is baby weight, but earlier this year I was back down to nearly my pre-pregnancy weight! I am still breastfeeding and I seem to have massive cravings for sugary stuff like chocolate, when before my problem was more with crisps and savoury stuff! We'd like to try for another baby (though not expecting much, given it took 4 years to conceive the first and we just feel very very blessed to have him). I still have SPD/PGP, which I developed during pregnancy, which means I am going to have to think carefully about what exercise I can do.

So today I have restarted South Beach, phase 1. For anyone who doesn't know about South Beach, it is basically a low GI diet. I'm hoping writing here will keep me on track! I am going to post my previous weight-loss record below as something to refer to.

This morning's weigh-in = 17.7.

Well, I managed the first day! Had omlette for breakfast, Mexican black bean salad for lunch and split pea salad and yoghurt for tea. Walnuts, cherry tomatoes and a veggie sausage as snacks.

Phase 1 is a bit crazy, especially the breakfasts. I had a linseed muffin and some yoghurt this morning. Forgot to put any sweetener in the muffin, so it wasn't great. I ended up dipping it in the yoghurt.

A big part of my weight loss last time was exercising, but it's a lot harder this time. I started off using the Wii and particularly Wii boxing, but I don't think I will manage the boxing with my pelvis problem. Have a toddler makes it much harder to find time to exercise as well. Though he is a bit of exercise in himself of course!

Ooooh good luck :) I love reading about all these different diets...funny what we do to
Lose weight haha. Do you get hungry on this one? Can the doc recommend you any exercise, there must be something you can do...

South Beach is great for not going hungry. Normally that is, I have actually been a bit hungry the past few days. I think maybe breastfeeding doesn't help! I have stuck to it though, 4 full days.

The recommended exercises are yoga and swimming, I am going to see if I can manage to do a yoga DVD at home, but I need the little one to sleep better than he has been this week. How's SW going?

How does it work - I don't know much about south beach at all! And I should imagine any diet would impact on breastfeeding and vice versa - you are giving away a lot of your energy to the baby...is there any provision or guidance in the diet for extra food whilst breasfeeding?

SW is going good thank you :) lost 3lb this week which is great, I was beginning to wonder if it works but after todays loss it really does. Its taken a lot of experimenting but I've learnt how my body deals with certain things...If i eat sugary stuff for brekkie (ie loads of fruit, or cereal and milk) I am really, really hungry a few hours later - it doesn't keep me going at all and that is when I reach for high syn products as there is not much I can snack on for free being vegan (like yogurt)...so I'm having cooked breakfast/savoury food every morning, works great. fits in better too as I'm not the biggest breakfast or morning fan so I'm having bigger and later breakfasts, then a small and sweet lunch (fruit salad, cous cous, that sort of thing) then a big dinner. Using my sweet stuff as snacks through the day :) big learning curve but getting there ;)
