Privileges, thanks and rep power

Hi all. Please can you tell me how to gain privileges, what rep power means and how to thank people? Thanks

Hiya,

I know that you can thank people for their post by clicking the 'thumbs up' thanks button in a post, it's in the bottom right hand corner.
And you can add to peoples rep power by clicking the scales/tree thingy that is white/silver and appears on the bottom left of the pale blue info part of the post.

Do you need 50 posts for it? Coz I couldn't find it before, but just posted 50th and then saw it out of nowhere!
