Syn calculator

Thought this might be helpful. Got it off SW website a while back. I keep it as a note in my phone for when I'm shopping etc. Bare in mind obviously free food values for working out syns but it's handy if you fancy a cake or chocolate and you don't know the syn value. It saved me from eating a bakewell tart at my mums last week! Lol

And that even then there are some foods that have free foods as a main ingredient but still don't qualify for a free food allowance eg ready made soups, sandwiches and pasta sauces.

don't forgot the above can only be used for foods without a free food allowance.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what contitutes as food with a free food allowance. I get that chocolate has no free food allowance but what types of foods does? X

anything where the first ingredient listed on the packet etc under ingredients is a free food gets a free food allowance. So the syns need to be worked out using the syns calculator, you can't use the 1 syn for every 20 calories.

Things like a ready mady shepherds pie for instance would have a free food allowance. So you couldnt work out the syns by looking at the calories and applying 1 syn for every 20 calories, as none of the free foods would be taken into account and the syn value would be a lot higher than it actually is.

There are some exceptions to that though, things like pizza, or pastry covered items, and soups and sauces, all which might have free foods don't unfortunately qualify for a free food allowance, the same as snack type items, like cake, chocolate, crisps, puddings etc

If you look at the syns calculator FAQ on the website, it will give you the list of items which DON'T qualify for a free food allowance, those are the foods where you can use the 1 syn for every 20 calories.

Hope that makes sense.

That is just another way of looking at the 1 syn = 20 cals rule, but good to see it confirms that you round down if the last digit is below 5 (so 14 = 1/2 syn, 15 = 1 syn)

I've just tested it on the snackulator on the official slimming world website and it comes up with the same result.

I'll continue using the 1 syn = 20 calories rule - easy enough to work out in my head when dithering over hot cross buns in the supermarket and saves carrying a list around with me.

(ps co-op lighter choice hot cross buns are 150 calories, so 7.5 syns - totally worth it!)
