Maybe carry a mini bottle of mouthwash around with you or have listerine strips (I get mine from ebay), they're a lifesaver. I have also found that now I have upped my water to between 3-4 litres a day, the breath problem really isn't there anymore. Good luck and like you said maybe leave the giving up smoking once you have finished this diet.

I would just try and concentrate on the diet for now, I think putting too much pressure on yourself to give up smoking too may just push you over the edge, I know it would me. Anyway, good luck and keep going.
