Does your career affect your diet??

I'm quite envious of people who love their jobs - mine is rather unstimulating and unchallenging but I can't afford to take a drop in pay, plus in today's climate I'm very grateful to have a job.

Cons to mine: I'm sat behind a desk all day; there's no canteen or staff room and all the places to eat locally are fast food.

Pros: we have a fridge and microwave, the people are nice.

I have a unit in an antiques centre and do 3 days a week,

Pro's...............I am very active there so on the go all day.

Con's ............. an excellent restaurant and bar on site.

I take yogurt, fruit and salad with me and an options drink in case of real temptation.
I have to admit to having a pan Catalan each morning which is half a small baguette type roll toasted and spread with fresh, mashed tomato, debloominlicious. It should have olive oil on it but I always ask them not to put any on. I just have salt and pepper on it. I use it as a HEB.

Hi All

Just thought it would be interesting to see what you all do as a living...be that job or housewife/ full-time mum etc??

I also wondered what were the dieting pro's and cons of your job??

I will start:

I work as a recruitment consultant...a pro is i'm so busy i don't get chance to snack and my colleagues are very healthy eaters, so only good food in the office

Main con is coming up to Xmas we get loads of boxes of choccies sent from our workers and clients!!!

Good question!

In my case, it used to, but that was only because I let itt or allwed it to. I am office-based and it is so easy to use the excuse of it being a sedentary job.

I replaced all the savoury and sugary snacks with fruit, milky sweet coffees with black and sweeteners, go for a 1.5 mile walk each lunchtime and stand as much as I can at my desk rather that sit, while looking for any excuse to pop out for something, go for a wander or even get the drinks in for colleagues.

I took control!

Steve

I'm a teacher.
Con - too many snacks around at break And lunch, meetings, training days, parents evenings.
Con - Christmas and end of yr chocolates!!! And easter with tins of choc and pretty much all year!
Con - far too busy with work during the day, work in the evenings and playing with my boys in between times to do any exercise!! Have nothing to add to this :) I have no sprogs but spend all sat knackered and sunday working.

Must get a new career!! Agreed! Xx

Lol, love my job... but its killing my diet!

Im a Civil Servant for one of the big government departments (can't say which one) and I work part time in an office.

My pros - Ive got a kitchen so heating up homemade meals or healthy ready made meals is ideal.

Everyone is a healthy eater

My cons - I work in London, so much food shops are available. If I don't have a meal planned. It's a nightmare to get food without temptation.

Plus Christmas with all the thank you chocolates make it hard

I'm a specialist teacher for children with dyslexia and other cognitive difficulties. I spend half my time in school and half in my office.

There's always cakes and sweets about!! Today someone in the office was passing round home made ginger cake!! Yummmmmmm!! I politely declined and ate pineapple instead - sob:cry:

I work for a firm of solicitors. We have a kitchen with fridge and microwave, free tea and coffee and lovely cold water dispensers. Best of all free fruit! Yup - we can stuff ourselves silly. And I'm lucky enough to have a colleague who's at SW goal so we "buddy" each other. I rely on the microwave a lot for my morning porridge and jacket pot or other heated lunches.

BUT...very soon we're moving to these trendy new open plan offices and such is the concern about food smells they have banned the microwave! I'm a little stuck on alternatives tbh. In fact I'm more worried about the lack of hot food options than I am about having to share an open plan office with colleagues after years huddled away in my own little room!

Pros - see above (for the moment) - the water is going too but we're still getting the fruit.

Cons - aside from the rare trip outside to visit clients or carry out an on site investigation the job is very sedentary.

I work as a diversity officer for local Fire and Rescue Service, been there 11 years now, and I love it - now part time after having kids, so just 3 days a week.

Pro - Staff canteen with salad bar - Pile up a plate with Jacket pot and as much meat and salad as you can for jut £2

Pro - also have a staff kitchen with lots of fridge and freezer space, and microwave!

Con - Staff canteen with hot meal choices - todays was chicken curry and wedges!!

I'm assistant head of dept in a secondary school- that's in special measures....

Con- STRESSSSSSSS = laziness when it comes to cooking
Con- Lots of stuff to juggle
Pro- We have a kitchen with fridge and microwave, tea and coffee.
Pro- On most days- when there is no parents evening/OFSTED/ LEA inspection/Exam booster session- the school day finishes early so can do 2 hours extra work and fit in an hour at the gym
Pro- Running around like a looney trying to fit everthing in = mucho Body magic!
Pro- Dept is really supportive so on Cake Thursdays (YES EVERY THURSDAY) I have the top-pan balance handed to me so I can get my 28g of cake.

I'm a student mental health nurse so I work shifts which mess about with my eating habits! When I work nights I feel too ill to eat proper meals which means I pick all night and then I'm ravenous when its time for bed in the morning :p

Oh and I absolutely LOVE my job :D Its such a change to enjoy going to work after working part time in shops and factories all my life, I waited until the children were both in full time school before I started my course ;)

I'm in admin... not my dream job, but it pays the bill until I finish my masters!

Pros: Free fruit, microwave, fridge and a canteen that does amazing jacket tatos

Cons: I'm sat down all day, and a trolley comes round twice a day full of chocolates and crisps AND in the morning with sausage butties....

xx

When i was 18 i went to college for 3 years to study nvq level 2 and 3 in professional catering, after completing i then went into full time work as a chef..

Thats where my weight just piled on :(

Around 4 years ago, i left my profession as being a chef (tired of the crazy hrs and smelling of food) and i am now studying my nvq level 3 in childcare, i passed my level 2 last year.. i now work with children and i may start a course next year learning special needs.

So at the minute no..my job doesnt lol

I work in a travel agent, I have set lunch times, 12pm and 3pm but also I can snack anytime in between.
I tend to have mid morning snacks like fruit with a cuppa and sometimes eat my brekkie at work too.

I'm a supply teacher (trying to get a permanent post)

Pros - When I get work I'm running around like a blue a*sed fly trying to sort things out - I rarely get told where the toilet/staffroom/photocopier/projector remote is or what the log on and password for the computer is or even the general timetable of the school day! As a result I'm barely thinking about food (and getting a bit of exercise)! Think this might also be a bit of a 'con' but not in the diet sense...

Pro - being on supply means at the end of the school day I can totally switch off and go home to no planning/marking so chilled enough to make the right food choices (god help me when I do get a permanent position, it's going to be a shock to the system to be bringing work home again). Being able to switch off is great for when I've been in a horrible school - the other day I got called a 'fat cow' by a 9 year old

Con - Staffrooms are evil places filled with cake, chocolate and biscuits.

Some really interesting jobs here!

I'm an operations manager and I spend a lot of my week travelling and staying away from home

Cons; can't get into a gym routine however I do try and book a hotel near a fitness first however it takes a lot of will power to go when you've just driven 4.5 hours down to London

Con; very temping to eat rubbish whilst your driving and stop at the services to get a large bag of sweets and/or a fattening sandwich and a massive bag of crisps

Con; I work from home when I'm not away which again takes a lot of will power to stay out of the kitchen cupboards!

Pro's; I've tried to turn a positive spin on my 'cons', I should be thankful I have the option to work from home as it means I can make something nice for lunch

I make sure I have some fruit with me when I'm going to be spending hours in the car and make a concious effort to keep driving past any service stations!

I work from home doing freelance design and illustration.

Cons:
- The majority of my work is computer based which means little exercise/effort required.
- I get bored and fidgety very easily and tend to find myself wandering to the kitchen far more than necessary!

Pros:
- I can prepare all my meals when I want/need them in my own kitchen.
- No unhealthy snacks or temptation around.
- Plenty of time to browse minimins when I feel the urge to snack!
- I pretty much get to pick my own working hours so if I want to do an hour on the wii fit in the morning in my pjs - it's all good!

Only other problem is that I'm so used to making my own lunches from scratch, I came into work with my OH today to run some errands and I had no idea what I could or couldn't eat in the 'food to go' section of Sainsburys! Much education needed lol.

LuhLuhLoser, you have my dream job! :D

I work part time in a cinema....which is in the middle of a leisure park surrounded by:

Burger King
KFC
McDonalds
Nandos
Chinese takeaway and buffet
Petrol station

Inside the cinema, we have:
Ben & Jerry's
Vending machines
Pic & mix
Popcorn, Nachos
Packet sweets
Candy floss

Pros: after working there so long, I can honestly say I am sick of popcorn etc. I can also park right in front of my workplace, so I don't have to detour around the above mentioned temptation spots - I can go straight to work and leave right after.

Cons: I hate serving food/ice cream, because customers ALWAYS say the same thing: "you obviously love it here, getting to eat all the food"....I stick to issuing tickets. I don't really get a break since I do short shifts, so I have to eat something before I leave as I can't work and snack.

Nursery junior deputy
Pro loads fresh frui cons bday all the time and they get fed every two hours!!!

Self employed.............self indulgent..........just bad !!
