This poem has helped me when I was a soldier in my earlier years. It helped me through things when times were hard and I wanted to give up. I hope it can do the same for everyone here, keep it in mind when things seem to be going wrong.

The Don't Quit presentation is based on a famous poem which was written many years ago. The author of this poem is unknown. Sadly, in recent years a number of people have claimed ownership of the poem and some have even claimed to have written it themselves!
Here is the original poem in it's entirety:

DON'T QUIT
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Thank you for sharing this and I absolutely love it

Cracking words fella - cheers :)

I take it from your avatar you are or were a Para ? I was all up for Sandhurst once upon a very long time ago & the Paras were my first choice of Regiment... what was P Company & selection like ?

I also love this classic from Rudyard Kipling... proper inspirational

IF

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

I was with 63 Parachute Squadron RCT

Passed P Company Course (all arms) in 1987

Passed Royal Marine Course(all arms) in 1991

I would still be called a hat by The Parachute Regiment (infantry).

P Coy was a frag fest when I did it in 1987 and was nails, passed it alright. Passed it when you had to earn the maroon beret and wasn't just given it to wear as the support arms are now.

Commando course was more military orientated training plus physical training. A different type of course and as such can't be compared.

I did P Coy first so that was harder. The courses have dropped their standards through the years as kids aren't as fit as of old (always on playstions/computers).

Great poem, thank you for sharing it with us.

I wondered if you were in the forces when I saw you were in Aldershot. They have fantastic sports facilities there, my children have played there several times over the last few years, the last time just this June. They hold the Hampshire Youth Games there which is great for kids.

I'd forgotten this! It used to be posted on the dividing screen in our Post office and I remember queueing with my mum every week and just standing there reading it. I love it.

It reminded me of 'If..' as well HD! lol

Brilliant my mum gave me this poem on a card a few years back. i love it.

Cheers for the feedback fella.. nowt wrong with RCT... certainly not a crap-hat reg :)

Can't believe they give the beret away without earning it via P Company these days... wrongness. The bit that always looked like it would scare the brown stuff outta me is the horizontal shuffle bars...

Sometimes I wonder how my life would've turned out had I gone for Sandhurst (I was mad for the Army as a nipper... was in the cadets for 3 years & then joined the TA & was a STAB for a bit).

I love this poem. My Mama gave it to me just before she died. I carry it in my purse and look at it often. It's so poignant and relevant to what we're all going through.

Thanks for posting.

As my son was growing up nearly all my weekends were taken up with my sons football games/tournaments.

I used to love it. He played for Aldershot boys football club from the age of five and the Camberley boys later in his early teens. They were so cute when they were small. It's my sons 18 birthday on the 12th August (tomorrow), how time flies.

The Aldershot Garrison Sporting facilities are great, normally over crowded with squaddies (I can say that now I am a civvie lol:)).
