Fruit Affecting Losses

Spicy

I've just seen a comment about not having too much fruit as it has sugars in it and this can affect losses.
Has anyone found this to be the case? How much is too much?

I've never heard this before so I thought I'd ask and see what you all think.

Heya

yes it has affected my losses, but it wasn't just fruit, it was veggies too also syn free food. I think it was more of a habit I was eating rather than eating because I was hungry. Taking a step back and questioning why I have picked up the apple/pear/ham/carrots etc etc has helped my losses again.

Thanks for the reply Helen. I suppose if we're picking up the fruit instead of the crisps and chocolate at least it's healthier!

Thats the point of it. I want to loose weight at a constant rate so for now will watch my fruit intake and general intake of foods and increase my activity. But yes instead of eating a bag of crisps or a piece of cake you are eating an aaple which yes may have 66cals but is refreshing, sweet, fat free(really) and far better for you nutritionally then that bag of crisps. So its all positive

I do understand that's the point but I can't quite get my head around the too much fruit will affect losses thing.
I know that too much of almost anything can, obviously, hinder weight loss but why the emphasis on fruit? How much is too much?

(I don't have anywhere near enough fruit to be fair so I'm not sure why this is bugging me!)

Slimming world says fruit is a superfree foods, they say it's the first thing you should reach for if you want a snack between meals.
I don't think too much fruit affects weight loss. I don't limit any fruit - sometimes I try not to have bananas and grapes as they are not a speed or superspeed food but only if I want to have a really good week.
I'm a bit of a rebel, I sometimes have TWO bananas a day and I know a lot of people on here limit themselves to one a day.

I think if you are hungry then eat fruit. If not, then don't.

SW does not restrict fruit, so enjoy it. xx

Hope fruit doesn't have a negative effect. When I want a snack and just want something I can pick up and eat, with no preparing involved. I like to grab an apple or a couple of clementines...ahhh!

I emailed sw with this question once (and ww), as I was following ww at the time, and someone on a different forum was telling people they shouldn't eat more than two pieces of fruit.

The answer (from both) was simply that fruit is fine to eat as unlimited. It does contain sugars, but these are natural and very different to refined or cane sugars and the body processes them differently.

Sw has been around for over 40 years and has been created by professionals who specialise in diet and nutrition. If fruit wasn't able to be eaten in large quantities then it wouldn't be a free food.

Should also point out that anything eaten in large quantities has the potential to slow our losses, but fruit sugars aren't the reason, it's the calories. 500 calories too many of fruit is still the same as 500 calories of veg!

Eating fruit or any of the foods will not affect losses if you are sticking to the plan.

Eating when you are not really hungry will. Just because a food is free doesnt mean you can eat non stop even when we are not hungry. So really if you are eating just for the sake of it, eating ANY of the free foods will affect your losses.

As long as you are sticking to the 1/3 superfree with meals and not eating past that satisfied stage then you are doing well.

I don't eat loads and loads of fruit but I eat quite a bit. On occasions I have been known to have 3-6 clementines in one sitting (more on one occasion) and it hasn't affected my losses in the slightest. I tend to avoid grapes and bananas (from previously being told 'not to eat them') therefore I can't comment on them !

I relied on bananas very heavily in my first few weeks and lost loads so I can't really say anything about them. I think its all down to each individual's body and how it reacts with various foods. I have been told to make sure I drink LOTS of water as it helps your body remove all that fibre you may have with eating so much fruit.

I've also heard that you should never eat fruit after a meal as your body can't 'process' it as well while there other food in your stomach. I think it's something to do with how quickly your body can digest fruit compared to other foodstuffs.

I know it's not part of sw but I always make sure that after eating fruit I leave it at least about 30 mins before eating anything else.

Well according to my women's fitness magazine (I read it and sort of count it as exercise!) it says that the sugar found naturally in fruit is called fructose and has a different affect on blood sugar levels due to soluble fibre that is contained in the flesh and skin of the fruit. This basically means that although it's sugar it's good sugar so shouldn't affect your loses.

Oh that is interesting. Maybe that is part of the reason why fruit is free but juiced fruit is not - no skin or flesh.
