Quote from my 20 yr old son yesterday when I served him baked potato with savoury mince "you know mum, nobody makes mince & onions as good as you do, I know gran's a good cook but your mince beats hers everytime"
1/2 lb mince
3 carrots finely diced and boiled for about 5 mins til half-cooked.
1 large or 2 small onions finely chopped
tons of mushrooms
very finely chopped (cos he doesn't like them

)
half bag frozen peas
2 beef stock cubes
1 veg stock cube
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tsps mixed herbs
1 tbl spoon tomato puree (think this is syned but not sure)
a handful of red lentils
pepper to taste
Serves 4-6 potions depending on size. To make it go further just add a bit more water and lentils.
gently fry the onions for about 5 mins then add mince. fry until brown then add mushrooms and cook for another 5 mins. crumble in the stockcubes, add the garlic powder, mixed herbs & tomato puree then cover with boiling water. add the cooked carrots, peas and lentils then simmer for about 30 mins to soften the mince. keep an eye on it cos you may need to add a bit more water if it gets too thick. (I like it when the spoon can almost stand up on its own, lol). Add pepper to taste. Tastes even better when you add some gravy granules but they are 3.5 syns per tblsp.
Its great with chips, mash, roasties or boiled potatoes, as a topping for jacket spuds and it makes a fab cottage pie. I've also mixed it with some boiled rice and stuffed stuffed peppers, courgettes and aubergines with it.
