Welcome to Holland

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel.

It's like this ....

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make wonderful plans. The Colosseum, Michalangelo's David, the gondolas in Venice. You may even learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?" you say. "What do you mean Holland? I signed up for Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change of plan. they've landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place. So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, but after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills. Holland has Tulips. Holland even has Rembrants.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy, and they're bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life you will say, "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned." And the pain of that will never, ever, ever go away, because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss.

But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.

Meaningless Wonder

I will wear ancient lace
draped over the bed
in a delicate seduction.

I will collect a flow
of tulip juice in a phial,
dab it behind each ear,
smear it on my wrist.

With breast exposed, I wade
in a primeval sea
celebrating my flesh:

At first glance
the visible marks
are the tide gone out -
unveiled pattern mars the beauty myth.

I am adrift
with no reference to cling to
except a stellar sky.

I am a raw cut of stone,
taking time to evolve.

I die over and over for love,
sacrificial offering - Lamb of God
go blindly in my White robe,

bindi painted on my brow
praying to Juno for guidance.

Excellent. MINI love your own poems. Well done. You're a poet and you know it !! LOL - sorry

The Road less travelled - Robert Frost

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler,
long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5

Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same, 10

And both that morning equally layI
n leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,A
and that has made all the difference. 20

We are all taking the road less travelled and its making all the difference !

The Dash Poem by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end

He noted that first came her date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

How very touching Karion...

Never thought of the dash like that before, will now.

It is a lovely crispy cold winters morning here and Robert Frost's poem always reminds me of winter...

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep

I eat my peas with honey
I've done it all my life
It makes the peas taste funny
But it sticks them to my knife.

Can anyone else 'modify' a well-known poem to give it a diet theme? Aha!! A challenge!! ;)

Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today?"

and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.

"H-M-M," she said,
"I think I'll part my hair down the middle today?"
So she did and she had a grand day.
