Advice on what diet to choose

Chronic dieter!!!
Hello all,

I have been a member of minimins for a long time and have done a range of diets (some healthier than others) with the support of other members. I have lost weight, gained weight, lost it again and gained it again! In between i have finished my degree, gotten married, moved house and now we are planning a family :D

I haven't quite regained everything i lost for our wedding last year, but almost!! And i am back in the obese category according to my BMI. I want to lose a lot of weight, i am currently 83.5 kg (13st 2lbs) and i want to be 57 kg (9st 0lbs), before we start trying. But i also want to eat healthily and get my body ready for the pregnancy while losing the weight.

I'm looking for a long term diet plan that i can continue to follow during pregnancy, not a crash diet. Any advice?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any help you can give me! :)

I struggle with my weight all the the because I love done, the only 'diet' plan I've been able to follow that's worked for me is slimming world x

I totally agree, I did so well til about 23 weeks now it's all gone pear shaped x

I agree about wanting sweets/ chocolate /cake whilst pregnant. I hardly have any non pregnant but loads pregnant!

I agree with Oasis about Slimming World. Once you are into it its more of a way of life rather than a diet. In my opinion it works best if u like cooking from scratch. Am not saying it doesn't work if u don't but think cooking from scratch gives best results!

The basic principles are:
superfree
Eat as much fresh fruit (not cooked or tinned) as u want
Eat as much veg (cooked, tinned, frozen or fresh as u want)
Nb potatoes, parsnips, beans (inc green beans) and peas are not on the 'eat as much as u like' category.

free
Can eat all of the below as long as your plate is 1/3rd of superfree.
Potatoes, parsnips, beans, pulses (e.g chick peas, kidney beans etc)
Rice, pasta, cous cous, noodles (all in dried format and unprocessed) - the quick cook rice and noodles are made with oil so aren't free.
Lean meats (fat removed) - chicken, beef (lean), pork, bacon etc.
Nb mince has to be extra lean and have less than certain fat content
Fish and seafood - tuna, salmon, cod or haddock, prawns. They are lot more but I tend to stick to them.
Fat free yoghurt of certain varieties (e.g most mullerlight, activist yoghurt etc)
Then things like tom puree, mint sauce, soy sauce, sugar free squash, diet drinks and fry light - a must!
Oh and eggs

As well as all that you get 2 'healthy extras' - one for grains (cereal or bread.mainly) one for milk or cheese. Both have limits on portion size and lots.of.specific products named.

Then u get between 5 and 15 syns a day which can be used on chocolate, wine, in food (e.g I like to use on tom ketchup, blue dragon stir fry sauces, sausages etc)
There are a lot of products that are free like mugshots, pasta n sauce, savory rice and also a lot of things u can buy which are low syn - eg maybe birds eye chicken breast might be a few syns.

God I wrote loads, hope it helps!

I can honestly say it's the only thing that's worked for me long term, and your always full. It really does change your eating habits, often you'll find that you've chosen better options without even having thought about it first. Well worth it, the only thing I'd say is at first it can seem really expensive with all the fresh food, but if you were going to diet/eat healthy anyway it's just the meat. As soon as you know where to buy best your sorted. When you get in a routine etc you don't spend as much each week as you normally would and most of the sw recipes are easy and taste great, even my hubby enjoys the meals x

Only thing is I worry about not being able to have much convenience food when I'll have 2 kids to run round after, and I only eat chicken, mince or sausages so not really much meat cus I don't like lamb or beef and dh doesn't like gammon or pork haha x

I made up batches of chicken pasta, chilli - with baked beans cos I don't like kidney beans and bolognaise and put them in storage containers and froze them, so all I have to do is cook them like I would a ready meal when I haven't got time to cook :) and sausage casserole etc x

Good idea, I keep meaning to do that actually for when the baby born so I know LO still eating okay and not crap every night lol x

Thanks everyone! I will have a look at slimming world. I am due to start the Dukan this Saturday so will see how i get on and in the meantime will look up if there is a slimming world near me :)
