Balsamic Vinegar

Just to let you know that our consultant told us today that balsamic vinegar is no longer free, something to do with grape must and the values have changed. Soooo its now 0.5 syns for a tablespoon.

Good job I can't stand vinegar then!

It doesn't taste anything like ordinary vinegar. Well, at least the real thing doesn't.

There are some suspiciously cheap things around called balsamic vinegar which I just don't believe are the real thing. And Tesco does something called a White Balsamic Condiment, which is in fact white wine vinegar with a very small amount of balsamic vinegar in it. Perfectly acceptable, but balsamic it isn't!!

For real balsamic vinegar I would be happy to allow half a syn for a tablespoon - you don't need much anyway.

Sorry but I think she is wrong. This is one of the rumours that goes round every now and then. A lot of consultants get confused about this because when you put it through the syn calculator it comes out as synned. Or they confuse it with balsamic dressing which has syns. Syns online is quite clear that all vinegars are free and even lists particular brands as free. I for one will not be synning it :)

I don't see why I'd need to start synning it seeing as how I've been having it since I started and it's been doing me no harm! Unless the recipe changes on a specific brand...

Balsamic vinegar is free, it's the balsamic dressings that are synned!!

No she specifically said balsamic vinegar. I am still going to carry on with it, I only use it in the s w bbq sauce and it is only a small syn anyway. Just thought I would pass on what we were told in class today perhaps someone else could ask their consultant what they think? :)

So this is wrong?

Thats really hard to read as it is tiny-but I guess the person who wrote that was referring to balsamic dressing! As I've just screen shot the pic above from the sw website :)

:confused:No its to do with the grape must! Anyway, as I said I put it in the syns calculator and it came up as 0.5 syns per tablespoon and to be on the safe side I am going with what my consultant said. I just wanted to pass on the info. Its only 2 syns if correct for the bbq sauce anyway. I suppose the only definative way of finding out is to ring or email S W direct.

I appreciate you are just passing on info, What I don't get is why you put it through the syn calc when vinegar is free anyway

I made the same mistake when I first started, I ran it through the calculator and it does come out with syns in but I was soon corrected that it is free. But by the look of that screengrab the C is referring to balsamic dressing as other people have said. Theres no such thing as "low fat" balsamic vinegar to compare "standard" at 3 syns to, so I think it's just a typo, automatically typing 'vinegar' instead of 'dressing'. Also, on syns online those are exactly the syns for standard and low fat balsamic dressing:

So Im 100% sure it's a typo.

Technically, Any food that you put though the syns calculator will come out with a syn value! My SWC said it had syns as she put it through the calculator. Anyway I re-checked the book and yes all vinegars, inc balsamic are indeed free!

Eeek I hope it is still free, I have it all the time on salad instead of dressing.....

Oh right thank you. Well sorry to cause confusion but I was only repeating what our consultant had told us!:)

Maybe it would be worth letting your consultant know that sw have confirmed balsamic vinegar is 100% free :)
