Couch to 5k challenge

I did Week 5 Day 1 today and I have to say the repetitions being less help cos each run you seem to get through so then when it's over there are less ahead of you! It's true it really does build you up, last week when starting week 4 I thought oh my god how am I gonna run 5mins then today did 5 mins x 3...... Wow! It really does hurt my knees, gonna try two big sports places this week and see does anyone know what they are talking about, meanwhile see what I can find out online incase!

Clareel & eatwell, fair play to you, congratulations!!

I bought some asics trainers today. They feel really comfy and I got them specially fitted. I was surprised to find I needed a size bigger than my normal show size. Even at half a size my toes were against the ends. Let's hope they give me many miles of running.

Eatwell, snap....

The pain of shin splints has moved on over the last 4 days or more to knee pain, and it's definately from the impact of running, felt like I might even have to stop for awhile but so didn't want to as would be back to square one and might loose motivation! So I went today to the 4 biggest sports shops in my area to find some new proper runners. From all I have read I had decided I defo wanted ASICS and have determined myself at home that I am most likely to be "neutral" foot type, well I swear its a disaster over here firstly no-one on the floor to help and then when you ask they gesture at the 3 or 4 pairs of runners they have with most having 1-2 pairs of ASICS in total, eventually in the last shop which I didn't think would have them did and a good selection and a helpful guy who seemed to know what he was talking about so got them and am delighted. OMG the difference in them compared to my Nike Shox (which I thought were great runners), I believe they will make a big difference, fingers crossed! Roll on tomorrow and I will see! I too was bigger in them than my normal size, I am normally a 5 and needed a 5 1/2.

Sorry to hear about your pain but I hope the trainers help. I went to a specialist shop for the fitting but didn't get them there as remembered a shop had a sale on and got the recommended pair. The chap in the first shop was a little condescending and obvoiusly thought i was too overweight to run seriously. He warned that if i got sore shins etc then it prob wouldnt be the trainers. Perhaps i am just being over sensitive and he was just giving good advice. I am hoping to avoid and injury as I don't want to start again. He did say that he was glad I was being realistic with the c25k programme. I tried the trainers out today as I couldnt resist. Did week 6 run 1 and they did seem ok and nice and springy.

He sounds like a prize tool eatwell...

That's rubbish anyway. People of all shapes and sizes run. I started by running for 30 seconds, then a minute the next day, then 1 minute 30 the next day (it was before I had heard of couch 25k) and I ended up running 10k within a few months and a half marathon within a year. Slowly, slowly catchee monkey...

Thanks for that. I was hoping running would speed up the weight loss but as a side effect it makes me feel good after each run and I am toning. It's not having a huge effect on the weight loss though. Most weeks I lose a 1lb and one or two I have lost 3. I am trying really hard to stick to the sw plan.

Eatwell, that's what I would have done had I have had the time I would have checked them out and bought online as that sportsdirect have great prices but just would have taken too long, I need to resolve this pain now! And I think he was an a*sehole to be like that to you but at least u got fitted properly so you knew what ones to get, what ones did you get in the end? I got ones called stratus 4, they seem to only be ones in Spain though as on the Spanish ASICS site but not the UK one, Nimbus looked good too but only had them for men here!

I got the nimbus. I just fitted into the mend category. Not been there before :). I really hope the trainers help with the pain

Thanks me too :) how did week 6 day 1 go? I started it the same time as starting SW so don't know if I would loose more/less if I wasn't exercising and I am finding it hard this week with SW, I do find it hard to only loose 1lb after all the effort and cost involved in the meals, shopping & planning, and do be so jealous of people being down 4lb + in a week!! I am now 3.5 weeks in and so bored with salads and fruit salads and am just finding it monotonous, need some inspiration!

clareel have you week 6 day 1 tomorrow?? Let us know how it goes!

Wooohooooo! Cannot believe I did a 20 min run today!!! Never thought it possible!! Feeling more than a little chuffed with myself!!! Also found it much easier than the 8 min runs. 2 and a half weeks now till my race for life and just starting to believe I'll be able to run it all!

Ps, updated you gemini76 X

I love the sound of this app! Have just downloaded it and really looking forward to starting it, I currently do one hour of zumba a week which seems to have little effect on my weight loss as Ive been doing the same class for 10months now. Im about to start swimming tomorrow so am looking to start the c25k on Thursday.

Well done to everyone who is currently taking part!

:) xoxo

Well done you, fair play to you, in what way did you find it easier??!! I did week 5 day 2 today with the 8 min runs and my god the new runners made the world of difference like comparing sleeping on a cement floor to a nice firm springy mattress!! Cant see how I will manage the 20 mins on Thurs, it's not the extra 4 mins or jogging but the lack of a break that I am worried about! But like every other day I will do it!!!

Well done sofartogo. 20 mins is a great achievement.

Gemini I too get fed up about not losing much each week despite working hard. I am enjoying cooking from scratch but not everyone in my family likes all my ingredients. I find it hard when I don't plan ahead and I have to work hard to keep focussed. It would be so easy to slip back.

Week 6 run 1 was ok. In some ways I found it harder than running for 20 mins but I think that's because it was hot and sunny.

Gemini, I think I just got into a stride. The first 5 minutes was hard but then it seemed to get a little easier and when u hear that you've done 10 mins I keep thinking that I've done more than half so its all down hill. Really enjoyed it (can't believe I'm saying that!) I found the 8 min runs a struggle last week but this was def a step forward!! (am suffering with my knees tho so may look into new trainers) x

That's great, it's just such a sense of achievement when your done isnt it? And coming on here and sharing it helps too as others know what you have actually achieved! Ye defo investigate the new runners esp as this could be a new form of exercise in the long term!

Hi All! :D

I've just joined the boards and am joining slimming world tonight at my local meeting. A bit apprehensive but feeling generally positive!

I came accross this thread and thought i would join up - did week 3 run 1 yesterday. I really ache today but it felt like such a massive acheivement last night.

Looking forward to keeping up with everyones couch to 5k progress and tips!

Diane xx
