Glycogen...??

Sauce

Nearly there...
Please can someone explain in basic terms what glycogen is please? And what it means when ending a vlcd? Is it gonna grip fat? Does moving up the cwp plans alleviate this? And if so, how does this differ to someone just easing the carbs and fruit and veg in themselves?

Glyko is the Greek word for sugar. Glycogen is sort of like your body's day to day energy drink - and yeah - it's like lucozade (a bit!) water and sugar...it's there for when you need to walk up 4 flights of stairs or run for the bus - a ready supply of energy ready to fire up the engines and go. Whilst it is there, your body leaves your fat alone. The ketosis handover occurs when there is no more glycogen left to get in the way and your body goes 'better go to the fat supplies then'.

Now - on a VLCD you get that 7lbs (usually) totally out of the way so that all you do is burn fat. The reason other diets work is that even with a bit of glycogen knocking about your body still knows to go and get some fat calories if food is in shorter supply as usual, if you exercise for more than 20 minutes your body does a chemical switchover and goes and starts burning fat as well.

Stepping up is vital because noone wants to see 7lb suddenly arrive even if it isn't actually fat - it makes you feel a bit puffy as VLCDers at lower weight often look quite gaunt as glycogen is kind of what plumps up your cheeks and stops you looking like Skeltor. People who step down gradually and follow the food restrictions on each level sometimes lose weight as well as return glycogen to their systems. I've seen women lose an extra stone and men sometimes lose an extra 2 stone.

Thankyu!!
