How do I get rid of a wasp nest?

There's a wasp nest outside my window in the guttering not sure exactly where but I see loads of wasps going in & out all day.

Is there a way to get rid of it or do I need to get specialists in? Or do I just leave it?

I'm scared of wasps & I keep getting them indoors...:cry:

If you know where the hole is and you can reach it, you can buy cans of wasp nest destroying stuff that you spray in, at dusk, because the majority of them are sleeping and in the nest. Its like a foam stuff and it expands in the hole. We had 2 of them last year, one in a wall in the house, and one in a garden wall and treated them both with this stuff (bought from B&Q) and didnt see hide nor hair of them again. You dont need to worry about removing the nest, they never go back to the same nest year on year.

I should get in touch with your local council who will have a pest control department, and they will come and do the job for you. You will have to pay perhaps £12 or so. I was having new fascia/soffits a few years ago and had a wasps' nest behind the guttering, possibly in the roof, and had to get this seen to before the firm would do the work.

We had a wasp nest in our attic & had a nice man come out & get rid of them for us. I'm not brave enough to do it myself.

As MLM said you don't need to remove the nest as they won't return to it next year.

Any chance you have the name Gill. I am not exaggerating but we get dozens of nests every year. I just blast them with fly spray when the are all in there but it's never totally successful.

I don't know about wasps but for ants etc there's a fab spray you get in Spain called Zum you spray it on the perimeter of your house and it kills anything that crosses it! We used to bring cans back, even sprayed the window frames and found dead flies all the time!
It supposed to last 12 months on one spray, in England it lasts six!

I don't know that it would but I think they sell stronger stuff in Spain try asking at the hardware store?

I have treated wasps nests very early in the season with the foam spray previously mentioned - can't remember what it is called but it comes in a red can and I get it from Tesco. It shoots out a spray of white foam which completely covers the nest and gets into all the sections of it. The advantage is that you can stand well back, then run like hell if you have to!

The trouble with this late in the season is that you could have literally thousands of wasps in there. If you can do it from a safe distance (you say it is in the guttering, so not up a ladder!) then you might be able to use the foam when it gets dark outside and the wasps are all in the nest, but to be honest I wouldn't. I would get the specialists in - ask your local council to recommend a firm.

Once the wasps are dead it is a good idea to leave the nest where it is. Not only do wasps not come back and use the same nest again, the sight of a nest, however old, puts off any wasps from nesting close by in the future.

Thanks so much for your replies, I think I'll get the council in as we are in a flat top floor although only 3 high..

It would mean leaning out the living room window to spray them & could be dangerous.

I'd leave them well alone but they get in the room & crawl on the floor & I'm worried that the baby crawls on it, touches them etc...my toddler spotted one last night on the carpet & told me about it.

I've seen about 10/12 wasps go in out so I'll jsut call the council & let them sort it!
