Thought i would start myself a weight loss journal - hopefully something to look back on from a more positive perspective in the future !
I was a thin child till about 7 years then started to put weight on. I was immediately put on strict diets by my mum. My earliest memory of this is one of my junior school teachers praising my weight loss at a Brownies session !
I eventually learnt i could lie to mum about what i'd eaten and from then on the diets stopped working and the weight piled on steadily.
I got a diagnosis of Hypothyroidism and PCOS aged 16. (these were both discovered whilst looking into something else so its unclear how long i had actually had these conditions before diagnosis)
Like most of us i have tried many, many diets over the years, some sensible and some downright dangerous ones. All ultimately ending up with a small short term loss, which was eventually put back on with a bit extra to boot !
Generally i was as happy as a fat adolescent / adult could be - i had a very supportive family, good extended friends network. I wasn't really bullied apart from odd throwaway jibes and i had an active social / personal life. I felt quite accepted. (maybe that was the problem - i didn't suffer enough !!)
In 2004, pre wedding, i went on Xenical and lost a couple of stones. This drug changed my way of eating for a short time (i had to change it as the side effects of not doing so were horrific !) but a change in job meant that this drug was no longer suitable so i just drifted for a while and put the weight back on.
Last year i developed high blood pressure, weighing in at my heaviest of 21 stone (5ft 2in) and decidied that if i wanted to see my neice and nephews grow up that i had to do something and soon......
My GP put me on Acomplia and referred me to my PCT's Specialist Weight Management Service. I found the new drug really helped and lost 1.5 stones whilst waiting for my first appointment. With their support i continued to lose gradually and had another loss spurt when i was put on Metformin due to PCOS. I was nearly at my 3 stone loss mark when the emotional side effects from combining the two drugs became problematic. I had to come off both drugs to clear my system and during this month i put 4 pounds back on. Although the side effects had disappeared i now felt very low due to the weight gain. I felt that all the positivity and motivation had been knocked out of me, so the SWM team decided i could try the Acomplia on its own again. I had a month on this and felt like i was getting back on track when they dropped the bombshell that Acomplia had been withdrawn.
Further discussions with the SWM team confirmed that it was now time to explore WLS more formally ( i had been researching it for many years !)
And thats where i am at the moment - i have just got my appointment to go to Sunderland Hospital for the intial group consult (end Jan) and i'm just counting down the days.
Sorry its such a long post but there was 27 years of "fat" to fit in there - the next posts will be smaller, promise :)

Good Luck on your weight loss journey x
